Today is the Feast of St. Anthony of Padua.

"St. Anthony, St. Anthony, come around! Something's lost that must be found!" Did you learn this rhyme in childhood? St. Anthony of Padua is more than the patron saint for lost items. By his life, he shows a special interest in lost souls. St. Anthony was born to noble parents, but he preferred a simple life of faith to the riches of his childhood. He joined the Franciscan order in 1220. He quickly became known for his eloquence in preaching. He had a way of reaching all sorts, from nobles to clergy to those who had fallen away from the Catholic faith. In addition to preaching, St. Anthony organized supplies for the poor and negotiated release for prisoners of war between Italian city-states. However you or your loved ones feel lost this week, pray for St. Anthony's intercession!

Did you know that June is the Month of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and that today is the Feast of the Sacred Heart? This feast celebrates Jesus' divine love, mercy, and his humanity!

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you!

Why do we celebrate the Hearts of Jesus in the month of June?

Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is an ancient practice. We can see its Scriptural origins in Jesus’ own references to His Heart. “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest … for I am meek and humble of heart” (c.f. Matthew 11:28, 29).

The devotion received a surge of popularity in the late 1600s. Jesus appeared several times to a French religious sister, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, pointing to his heart. During this time, the Jansenist heresy had risen in France, which preached limited predestination for salvation. When appearing to Margaret Mary, Jesus affirmed his love for all mankind: “Behold the Heart which has so loved men that it has spared nothing.” He asked for a special feast celebrating his Sacred Heart on the Friday following the feast of Corpus Christi. Over time, June has become known as the month of Sacred Heart.

Today is the Feast of St. Barnabas.

St. Barnabas was a Levite from Cyprus who, with St. Paul, was an apostle to the gentiles.

Originally named Joseph, the other apostles gave him the name Barnabas, which means “son of encouragement.” All possessions were held in common, so Barnabas sold a field he owned, brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet. He became a leader of the Church in Jerusalem.

When Paul, who had been a persecutor of Christians, was converted and wanted to join Jesus’ followers, the disciples were understandably skeptical about Paul. It was Barnabas who advocated for him and encouraged others to forgive him. Barnabas is, therefore, the patron saint of second chances.

Barnabas brought many to the faith in Antioch and it was there that the followers of Jesus were first called Christians. The Acts of the Apostles also recounts his central role in sending aid to those impacted by a severe famine. Additionally, he is one of several proposed authors of the Epistle to the Hebrews.

While the exact details are disputed, tradition holds that he was martyred at Salamis in Cyprus. His feast day is celebrated on June 11.

Blessed Barnabas, pray for us!
