Dear Facebook friends.
I am considering canceling and deleting my presence on Facebook.
This isn’t just some flounce where I am seeking attention for people to beg me to stay, I don’t do that. This issue is this. Over the past year, my engagement with this site as been greatly reduced and limited to reacting to funny things and occasionally posting groaner puns and funny anecdotes. I have avoided the more divisive political stuff and generally pulled back. Not out of any particular need for space, I just don’t have the time for it.
No, what’s happening is this. Over the past year Facebook has been dinging me for things that just aren’t true. I suspect it’s an automated TOS enforcement algorithm that cannot take context, humor or irony into account.
I have gotten various warnings of content removal for myriad reasons; none of which I can dispute because Facebook gives no way to see what it was or why it violated content rules.
How is one meant to correct one’s errors if one cannot know what one did wrong?
They have done this, by the way, for posts that were made 12 years ago but only offended the TOS this year, I suppose.
Today, they went a step too far, accusing me of posting a comment that they thought represented child sexual exploitation, placing restrictions on my account as a result. Knowing this is probably an automated decision, I am awaiting review of said comment and will see what is the result.
Suffice it to say, there was never any such content, no would I ever imagine anything I might have posted would even justify such an accusation.
Therefore, pending the results of the review, if you see me disappear from the platform, please know it wasn’t out of any drama with anyone here. It isn’t a power move where I make a big showy resignation to show my displeasure, it is merely me walking away from a platform that no longer serves me or its clientele very well.
