IPhone IOS 11 - new I am driving feature - (reposted article)
Each day in the United States, approximately 9 people are killed and more than 1,000 injured in crashes that are reported to involve distracted driving. Driving this week on the New York State Thruway I saw so many people swerving of all ages and saw they were texting on their phone. It is hard and I know that you get that ping and the anxiety kicks in of what if it is important. Your mind says I can handle it now while I am doing nothing on this road but you are doing something you are driving. I have to confess I also suffer from what I will call the “ping syndrome” My phone pings and I think is it important and then suddenly I am breaking the law and what example am I showing my kids. I read about Apples new feature Do Not Disturb while Driving and put it on my iPhone. Here is what it is and how it works and honestly the car rides now are really enjoyable with no more ping stress. I would suggest everyone put this on your iPhone today and help make our roads that much safer. My phone is now smart enough to know I am driving and will send a text message back to the person saying I am driving if this is important please call me or I will return your text when I stop driving. It is really a nice feature. What I have learned from adding this feature is most things honestly can wait and if it is important enough because my car is Bluetooth capable my phone will allow a phone call to come through. This new feature on the Iphone will save lives and we all need to find a way to stop “ping syndrome” Do you have it?

Merry Christmas from all of us at Torrington Insurance Agency.

"Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings" - William Arthur Ward
We thank you for the opportunity to work with you throughout the year - sending you and those dear to you warm wishes for a wonderfully Happy Thanksgiving!
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that Thanksgiving is the peak day for cooking fires at home. Here are some kitchen safety tips:
1.If you have to leave the kitchen, even for a short period, turn off the stove. Vegetables will still continue cooking.
2.Use a timer if you have something in the oven, or are boiling or simmering something on the stove.
3.Keep children away from the cooking area and establish a “no kids zone” of at least 3 feet around the stove.
4.Keep anything that can catch on fire away from the stove – that includes wooden spoons, paper and plastic bags, food packaging, towels, curtains and oven mitts.
5.Clean up spilled food and splattered grease from your stovetop.
6.Make sure you have a smoke alarm installed with working batteries.
7.Have a small fire extinguisher handy – just in case.

A swimming pool can cause many hours of enjoyment in the Spring & Summer months.
But, drowning can happen in the blink of an eye, and often occurs when you are NOT outside.
Here are some safety tips to pass along to increase the degree of safety this year:
1.The pool area should be fenced & locked.
2.If the pool is above-ground, lock the gates & steps leading into the pool.
3.Use a pool alarm if there are small children in the home or neighborhood.
4.If someone is missing, always look in the pool first.
5.Don't leave inflatable or other devices floating in the pool. This can be an attraction for small children.
Pool safety should be the responsibility of all household members.
Some tips may seem to be common knowledge, but the number of drownings that occur each year proves that they are worth repeating!!

May is Motorcycle Awareness Month.

Scam Alerts | Consumer Information
5 MORE WAYS TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM FRAUD:
Talk to someone. Before you give up your money or personal information, talk to someone you trust. Con artists want you to make decisions in a hurry. They might even threaten you. Slow down, check out the story, do an online search, consult an expert — or just tell a friend.
Hang up on robocalls. If you answer the phone and hear a recorded sales pitch, hang up and report it to the FTC. These calls are illegal, and often the products are bogus.
Be skeptical about free trial offers. Some companies use free trials to sign you up for products and bill you every month until you cancel. Before you agree to a free trial, research the company and read the cancellation policy. And always review your monthly statements for charges you don’t recognize.
Don’t deposit a check and wire money back. By law, banks must make funds from deposited checks available within days, but uncovering a fake check can take weeks. If a check you deposit turns out to be a fake, you’re responsible for repaying the bank.
