How Long Does Someone Live With Dementia?
It is often one of the first questions families ask after receiving a diagnosis.
“How much time do we have?”
The truth is that dementia does not come with a clock. Some people live only a few years after diagnosis. Others live ten, fifteen, or even twenty years. Age matters. Overall health matters. The type of dementia matters. Access to care matters. But perhaps the most important thing to understand is that every journey is unique.
What families quickly discover is that dementia is not one event. It is a series of transitions. Changes in memory. Changes in judgment. Changes in independence. Along the way, there are important conversations about driving, finances, living arrangements, safety, nutrition, medical care, and future planning.
Yet focusing only on life expectancy can cause us to miss what matters most.
The better question may be: How can we make the time we have meaningful?
Research and experience consistently show that exercise, social engagement, quality sleep, proper nutrition, hearing and vision care, medication reviews, and strong support systems can help people live better and often longer. Just as importantly, they can improve quality of life for both the person living with dementia and the care partner walking beside them.
Dementia may change memory, but it does not erase humanity. Behind every diagnosis is a person with a story, a lifetime of experiences, and a need for connection. Long after facts and dates are forgotten, the feelings created by kindness, comfort, laughter, music, and love often remain.
The goal is not simply more years.
The goal is more good days.
More moments of connection.
More opportunities to say, “I love you.”
More reasons to gather around the table, hold a hand, share a song, and celebrate the life that is still being lived.
Because dementia is not measured only in years.
It is measured in moments.
