Was it more cost effective to pay the $5M ransom than to have had strong security and backup processes? It's hard to say with an operation like theirs. IT security is expensive, but a company being brought to it's knees because of no security and no contingency is much more expensive.

60% of companies go out of business following a major security incident. Don't click on an link you're not expecting, use complex passwords, do not email passwords, do not give your password to anybody unless you are certain it is authorized. Always assume it is not authorized until proven otherwise. When in doubt, don't take a chance.

OVH is Europe's largest cloud computing provider. Their Strasbourg facility was completely destroyed by fire (Thankfully nobody was injured). All services are inoperable and they have instructed their clients to activate their disaster recovery plans. Many companies believe if they have a cloud solution they have nothing to worry about. This is not true, if you're in the cloud, you still need to backup, preferably to another location and you do need a disaster recovery plan in place. If your systems fail, what will you do to continue operating? While this is visual because you can see the fire, ransomware has the same effect.
