Time for an amazing ! We would like to congratulate Laurie Collier of Hendricks Township Volunteer Fire Department who was chosen as Highline’s August First Responder of the Month 🚒

Laurie was nominated by her sister Julie, who states “Laurie is a dedicated, well trained, knowledgeable, and caring first responder who has volunteered since retiring from her career in nursing. She has organized and helped make Hendricks township a professional operation. She is deserving of recognition for her tireless efforts for her community.”

Laurie has been a part of the Hendricks Township Volunteer EMS team for the past 7 years. She is a retired RN BSN that maintains her license “just in case she needs it”. She finds that her 50 years of nursing experience and training helps her in her work as an EMS First Responder. Laurie has also helped with the covid vaccine clinics in both St. Ignace and Mackinac Island. Laurie was instrumental in securing grant funds for their new ATV Rescue Unit that helps them get to emergency situations almost anywhere they may get called out to. With the vast and heavily wooded terrain of the UP it’s a much-needed tool to assist in their rescue efforts covering all of Hendricks Township and a portion of Moran Township.

We asked Laurie: What’s the best part of your job? She answered, “Caring for people and serving her community.” What made you decide to become a First Responder? “Again, the love of caring for people with a much-needed service in our area.” What would you like people to know about you or volunteering as an EMS First Responder? “Take the class needed to become an EMS First Responder or Fire Fighter, we need more young people to volunteer to be able to continue offering emergency services to our communities. As EMS FR we need to be prepared for any situation because we don’t know what we are walking into on a call. We are required to complete 15 continuing education credits every three years, it’s not just 15 solid credit hours, it’s broken up into separate sections that cover almost everything we do. We are always looking for younger recruits, so if you’re thinking about becoming a volunteer EMS First Responder or Firefighter but have questions, please reach out to your local volunteer department.”

Laurie’s husband, Ken a retired United States Air Force Veteran is part of the EMS First Responder team plus a Fire Fighter Level 1-2 Haz Mat. He has no medical background like Laurie does, but he took the class on his own to join her in helping their community.

Laurie would like to thank her sister Julie for nominating her as First Responder of the Month, sister Stacy for setting up the surprise get together with fellow First Responders, Friends, Family and Neighbors, and her husband for partnering with her as a First Responder.

"I have really enjoyed learning about this field. I never imagined I would work in this industry, but I’m truly enjoying it. The people I work with are some of the friendliest and most helpful colleagues I've ever had."

Cody is a volunteer firefighter and medical first responder. When Elk Township has a fire or medical call, you can always count on Cody to be there. He truly cares about the residents of his community and is selfless. He is dedicated, hardworking, and the first to respond on scene in an emergency or crisis. No one is more deserving of this recognition than he is.
