All kidding aside, I was super stoked how this video came out for almost no budget. We shot this in a (very long) day in Tamara Gamez childhood home that burned down just weeks after it happened. I have a hot take today. Let me know your opinion—or just tell me off😂.
So, I’ve been recording music for 25 years now and have had the opportunity to record bands using original 421’s and reissue 421’s. I’ve also mixed songs where the original engineer used 421’s. In my personal opinion, and to my ear, these are the most overrated microphones in the industry. I understand it’s a “classic” but is that an excuse to use them? I think they sound absolutely terrible on drums (toms and snares) and guitars. I’ve done blind tests so many times, that if I get a song to mix where the engineer used them—I can instantly tell. You can usually make them passable and sometimes good, but you have to spend a stupid amount of time fussing with an eq, and sometimes, you even have to pull out a multi-band compressor. There are so many microphones (some even a 3rd of the price) that sound soooo much better and require just minimal eq. To be 💯 I’ll take a cheap old sm58 over a 421 for guitars or drums any day of the week.
