🌿 Holy Saturday Czech style ~ ancient traditions still worth knowing!
In Czech homes, Holy Saturday (Bílá sobota) was never just a quiet day before Easter. It was full of customs passed down through generations.
Here are some of them:
🧹 Sweeping the house with a brand-new broom
Czech housewives swept every corner, beating out cobwebs and winter dust. Freshly washed laundry was hung outside to air, believed to keep moths away all year.
🍰 Baking mazanec, Easter lambs, and stuffing
With the Lenten fast finally over, Czech kitchens came alive with fragrant baking. Meanwhile, boys quietly braided their pomlázka whips from fresh willow branches, getting ready for Easter Monday.
🔥 Lighting the Judas Fire in front of the church
Fires blazed in front of churches across Bohemia and Moravia. Families carried glowing embers home to protect their house from lightning and fire, or pressed them into the soil to bless the harvest.
🌳 Shaking fruit trees when the bells started ringing again
When church bells rang across Czech villages, people rushed into their orchards and shook the fruit trees to wake them up for a plentiful harvest. Coins were jingled at the same time to bring abundance for the year.
💧 Washing your face in cold stream water
Girls and women washed their faces in cold running water on Holy Saturday morning. The idea was simple: no freckles, rosy cheeks, and good health throughout the year.
✨ Many of these customs lived on for centuries in Czech villages. Which one would you bring back?
