Our Vision: HPM is making a change. Higher Power Ministries is a non-denomination church located in Temple TX. Only there for a short time of two months.

We were founded October 1, 2006 in the home of the Pastor son. HPM then moved to the Bell Fine Arts building in Belton TX. The BFA building was home for only a short time as well as we continued to grow. Within a couple of years we were blessed to move again to a chapel that seated up to 150 people. This is the place where God moved like never before. HPM was blessed to pay no rent for two years w

Have you noticed all the hype lately about the vagus nerve?

It’s everywhere.

People are buying devices, taking cold plunges, doing breathing exercises, humming, meditating, and looking for ways to “activate the vagus nerve” because researchers are discovering how important it is for stress, inflammation, emotional well-being, and overall health.

One theory getting a lot of attention is called the Polyvagal Theory, which suggests that when we feel safe, connected, loved, and at peace, our nervous system shifts out of “fight or flight” and into a state of healing, restoration, and connection.

As I was reading about it, something hit me…

Think about what happens during worship:

🎵 We sing together.
🙏 We pray together.
🤝 We encourage one another.
❤️ We hug, laugh, and share life together.
🙌 We focus on gratitude instead of fear.

Researchers have found that activities like singing, humming, slow breathing, prayer, and meaningful social connection can activate the vagus nerve—the nerve that helps regulate stress, inflammation, heart rate, and emotional well-being.

In other words, many of the things that happen in a healthy church service are the same things scientists are now studying to help people reduce anxiety, increase resilience, and improve overall health.

Now, I’m not saying worship is just biology. Worship is first and foremost about connecting with God.

But I do find it interesting that long before scientists discovered the vagus nerve, God’s people were already singing, praying, worshiping, gathering together, encouraging one another, and giving thanks.

Maybe that’s because…

God created us before science discovered us.

Sometimes science isn’t revealing something new—it’s simply catching up to what God already knew.

So if you’ve ever walked out of a worship service feeling lighter, calmer, more hopeful, more connected, and more at peace—even though your circumstances hadn’t changed—you may have experienced both a spiritual blessing and a physical response from the way God designed you.

“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.” — Psalm 150:6

What are your thoughts?

Coincidence, or for me it's just more evidence of a Creator who knows exactly how we’re wired? 👇
