These are some of the notable people and places that we’ve had the privilege of learning about through our series of the Black Church. Their influence shaped the trajectory of the Black church in America:

Jarena Lee: the first women commissioned to preach in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church.

First African Baptist Church (Savannah, GA): the home of the first Black Baptist congregation in North America est. in 1773.

Nat Turner: an enslaved African American preacher who led an uprising of free and enslaved Black people in Virginia in 1831.

Mother Emmanuel AME Church (Charleston,SC): founded in 1817, this is the oldest African Methodist Episcopal church in the southern United States.

Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie: In 2000, she was the first woman elected to be a bishop in the AME church.

Join us tomorrow night to learn more about amazing Black people, past and present as we continue the series of the Black Church.
