There was a lot to celebrate today at Tempe Fire Medical Rescue.

During today’s badge pinning and awards ceremony, we welcomed four new paramedics and two new EMTs and celebrated the promotion of Chaz Contreras to Captain Paramedic.

We also recognized 12 members of the TFMR Honor Guard and Pipes and Drums with Distinguished Service Medals for their work representing Tempe at ceremonies, memorials and other events.

Seven members of Ladder 276 and Medic 276 received a Unit Award for their response to a medical emergency during a home birth, where their teamwork helped save a baby’s life.

Congratulations to everyone recognized today and thank you for the work you do for Tempe.

August is month.

Last week, Tempe Fire Medical Rescue and Phoenix Fire Department technical rescue crews responded to Mummy Mountain after a hiker became ill at the summit and couldn’t safely make it back down.

That hiker was Glen Keane, an Oscar-winning animator whose work includes Disney classics like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Tarzan. He’s also the son of Bil Keane, the cartoonist who created The Family Circus.

Our Tempe TRT members were among the firefighters who climbed to the top, reached Glen and helped secure him into the harness for a helicopter rescue.

Today, Glen came to Phoenix Fire Station 12 to meet and thank some of the Tempe and Phoenix firefighters who helped him that day.

He also brought them something pretty incredible: an original illustration he created of the rescue, titled “Our Family Helping Your Family.”

It’s not often our firefighters get to reconnect with someone after a rescue like this. We’re glad Glen is doing well, and we’re grateful for the chance to see him again.

And Glen, thank you for the artwork. That means a lot.

August is Drowning Impact Awareness Month.

Adult supervision is the number one way to prevent drowning. We typically see an increase in drowning incidents during August in Arizona as families get distracted with back to school. With this new season of life and a lot of uncertainty it can definitely be distracting. It is okay to "close" your home pool when you need to or when it's not time to swim.
An adult should be sober, know how to swim, know CPR and limit distractions when poolside. Better yet - get in and swim!

Recently, Tempe and Phoenix firefighters rescued a hiker who suffered a broken leg at Hole in the Rock.

What many people don't see is the training behind a rescue like this.

When someone is injured on a mountainside, there isn't a "912" to call if the rescue becomes more complicated. That's why Technical Rescue Team members spend hundreds of hours preparing before they're ever needed.

Depending on the terrain, it can take 12 to 16 firefighters to safely move both the patient and the rescue team.

Every team member completes a 200-hour certification program before joining the Technical Rescue Team. From there, training never really stops. Throughout the year, they continue building specialized skills in rope rescue, helicopter operations, confined space rescue, swift water rescue and more.

Technical Rescue Teams also respond across city boundaries as part of the Valley's automatic aid system, so firefighters from different departments regularly train together to ensure they can work seamlessly when every minute counts.

We hope you never need a Technical Rescue Team. But if you do, you can have confidence that the firefighters responding have prepared for that moment.

We get it. The mountains are calling.

But when it's 100°+ outside, our answer is a pretty enthusiastic "Don't do it."

Arizona summers can turn a hike into a medical emergency faster than many people realize. Every year, firefighters respond to hikers overcome by the heat, and many of those emergencies are preventable.

Instead, choose an early morning walk or visit an indoor attraction.

Tempe's trails aren't going anywhere. They'll be waiting for you when temperatures are safer.
