Comprehensive vocal training for singers of all ages

08/24/2024

What's the point of taking voice lessons?

"I'm a bad singer, what's the point"/"I'm already good, why take lessons?"
Singing is a way of making music with your body. Just like any other instrument, singing requires fine motor skills and coordination. Those who are new to singing may feel that they are a "lost cause," but with the right teacher they can learn how to find control and freedom in their singing. Those who are "already good" can always benefit from learning more! For more advanced singers, voice lessons can help catch habits before they become problematic, expand their skills to find more versatility in their singing, and learn technique that can lead to a long, sustainable career of healthy singing.

"Singing is a talent you're born with"
Singing is a skill that can be learned. While some people may be able to make exciting, beautiful sounds without training, everyone can learn how to sing. And don't you want to find out what your voice can do?

"If I'm not going to be famous, what's the point?"
We make decisions every day to improve our lives and explore our hobbies, passions, and things that bring us joy. It's always worth investing in yourself, and who knows? With the right teacher, you can achieve things you've only ever dreamed of.

"I'll just watch some YouTube videos"
As a studio who posts tips and tricks about singing on social media, this may seem hypocritical, but what you see online is only a snapshot. Often information is left out, or stated in a way that doesn't tell the full story. Most importantly, it's not catered to your unique voice, brain, and body. Private voice lessons ensure that you are getting instruction that is tailored to your goals, voice, and personality.

Ever wonder "how come certain notes feel easier in some songs than others"? Part of the reason may have to do with the combination of vowels and consonants in the words that you're singing. Exploring different approaches in your vocal warm-ups can set you up for success in your rep!

Using a "v" in your vocal exercises can help find the "just right" placement in the event that you're using "too much" compression or "not enough"

"h" consonants like in the word "ha" can help with a softer approach, especially if your goal is to find a breathy vocal quality (pro tip: try this to achieve the lovely "intimate" vocal colors of a Billie Eilish song)

using a "y" at the beginning of a word like "yeah" or "yes" promotes a forward, sloped tongue which can result in a brighter tone, forward placement, while helping you avoid pulling back the tongue, especially on higher pitches ❤️🎵

If you feel discouraged by the things your voice *can't* do, or are stuck in a loop of comparing yourself to others... take a step back and give yourself permission to be where you are.

Comparing ourselves to singers who have been training longer than us, have different voice types/technique, or have been more "successful" is a recipe for disaster. All that you can do is start where you are and go from there. Give yourself some grace and enjoy the journey!❤️🎵

Short, focused practice sessions can be a great way to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. Set a timer for 15 minutes, set a goal for your session, and let yourself be fully present until the timer goes off. This will allow your body time to rest between intense voice use sessions and will give your brain the opportunity to process what was achieved in that practice session. You'll be surprised how efficiently you can use these short bursts of time throughout the day!❤️🎵

Dietary changes may seem harmless since nothing you eat or drink touches your vocal folds. However, our bodies get used to the fuel it is receiving on a regular basis, and a sudden change can lead to instability in your singing as your body adjusts to a new diet.

If you're looking to change your diet, just make sure that your body has lots of time to adapt before any big performances or auditions🎵❤️

If you find yourself "going through the motions" during your warm-ups, or you're not totally sure what you're "supposed" to be doing, here are a few suggestions:

1. Always have a goal: sometimes your goal might just be to warm up your voice to work on rep! Or maybe there's a specific approach to technique you've been working on. Whatever your goal, make sure that you have one and use that to model your warm-up routine around!

2. Connect to your body: doing something intentional like stretching, breathwork, grounding techniques, or even mindfulness, can help you be in the right physical and mental space to get the most out of your warm-ups!

3. Focus on balancing vocal registers: careful not to fall into the trap of focusing only on one part of the voice. If you've been working on belting, make sure you're not neglecting your head voice! Or if you're focused strengthening your high notes, don't forget to check in with your chest register at least a little bit

4. Change up your warm-ups: our bodies adapt to routine, so just changing a pattern, switching up the rhythm, or singing the same exercise on different vowels could help you progress to the "next level"!

5. Be like goldilocks: many singers default to one extreme or the other... either jumping right into rep after lip buzzing for a few seconds, or warming up for so long they're too tired to work on their rep. Find that "just right" place to get the most out of your warm-ups!🎵❤️

Rest and recovery are equally as important as putting in the work! If your brain or body is telling you they need a break, take it!🎵❤️
