HUNGRY:
I wanted to learn all I could learn, but there wasn’t much, and - those veterinary anatomy books are like $300 each!! Git outta here!!
Dr. Wiloughby authored a book that talked a lot about animal chiropractic, and I read the whole thing in the aisle at Barnes & Noble! Hoped that one day, I’d get to meet her. A true pioneer. I never did. Big regret.
People think it’s weird when I talk to their horses.
What - am I supposed to just ignore them when they ask me a question??
THE DAWNING
When I was first in practice in Temecula - let’s call it 1987 - a new patient moved her family here from Colorado. She said she was familiar with Applied Kinesiology technique, and I got all excited - “Where did you hear of me?” sure that there’d been an important professional referral.
“I looked in the phone book, and started with ‘A,’” she said.
“Oh,” I said, only happy that somebody had seen my too-expensive ad.
A couple years later, she asked me, “I’m having a guy out to adjust my horse - is that something you’d be interested in seeing?”
Well heck yes it was, and after I’d watched this horseshoer/trainer clod who’d learned how to make a decent manipulation, do his thing on a horse, I said, “Oh, I need to learn how to adjust animals.”
There wasn’t much in writing, but Pinterest had great anatomy charts, and I knew I needed to get my hands on spines and learn what “normal” was before anything else. So that’s where I started.
The horse-y patient mentioned Linda McKeel, mostly because she was friendly and had lots of horses, so I searched out McKeel Ranch, and told her what I was up to. She held horse after horse after horse for me, while I just felt skeletons and muscle structures, and taught myself about healthy horse anatomy. It was glorious.
I remember being very happy, and that I smelled like horses.

‘Tis the season when horses slip in the mud! If slipping and sliding and falling is part of your horse’s rain routine, remember to keep your animal chiropractor in the loop.

Lucky horses:

A big, beautiful Percheron/Thoroughbred wouldn’t lift his legs for the horseshoer. His left front and his right hind simply did not stay up; he wouldn’t do it.
For safety’s sake, they took off his shoes, but that hadn’t helped.
We made friends and had a little talk and got along just fine, and I adjusted him, starting at the atlas, with extra time on his left shoulder and sacrum. He was very healthy, and very strong. And he licked-and-chewed through the whole thing.
I finished with a few home-care instructions, then picked up his left front effortlessly, and his right hind like it was a game.
The owner just couldn’t stop giggling - he thought his favorite horse was headed to retirement! And here he was, trotting around in a new frame.
Balance is the best way of going!
