Photos and words by Hagerty! “Spy photographers recently captured several shots of the GR GT testing at the Nürburgring, and there are lots of indicators that this is no ordinary GR GT. The first and most obvious change here is the large rear wing, a swan-necked, ironing board of a thing that should provide plenty of downforce to keep the rear end planted at higher speeds.

The carbon fiber wheel arch vents over the front wheels are also new, though such units are found on the GT3 car. Engineers usually place vents like this to help reduce pressure inside the wheel wells, thus improving front downforce.

While it might be easy to write this off as the next iteration of the GT3 variant, note that this one still has five-lug wheels. Those five-lug wheels make us think that this is definitely a road-going variant of the car rather than another race car.

If that is indeed the case, the question then becomes whether this is a package to tack onto the existing GR GT, or if it’s treated as a separate model.

We’re reaching a bit now, but let’s go back to the 911 lineup as a theoretical roadmap for Toyota’s supercar. With some models of the 911 now offering hybridization, the GT3 RS represents the purest distillation of the 911’s performance envelope because it does without any hybrid components. Perhaps this variant of the GR GT could ditch the electric motor and battery for weight savings and performance, just like the car it was testing against that day? We’ll have to wait and see.”
