When it comes to recurring tension and pain, we MUST look at the underlying pattern.
BUT...
Not just the pattern IN the area where the problem is located, but the WHOLE body.
In this video, Sam discusses the critical importance of identifying the larger body tension pattern.

The spot that feels loud isn’t always the spot that started the conversation.
The body works like one connected system — ribs, spine, hips, shoulders, and feet all influence each other. That’s why tension in one area can sometimes be linked to movement patterns somewhere else entirely.
This is where asymmetry matters.
Instead of chasing the obvious spot, we look at how the whole body is shifting, compensating, and protecting. When the system is assessed together, the path forward gets a lot clearer.

⚡️ Most people think hip or low back discomfort starts in the hip or low back.
Sometimes it doesn’t.
A common — and often overlooked — contributor is how the feet and ankles are loading, moving, and absorbing force.
When one foot collapses inward, one ankle is stiffer, or one side loads differently than the other, it can change how force travels up through the knees, hips, pelvis, and lower back.
That’s why discomfort may keep showing up around the outer hip, upper glute, SI area, or lower back — especially with standing, walking, training, or longer periods on your feet.
The good news?
This kind of pattern can often improve with the right approach.
Simple things like better foot awareness, ankle mobility, foot and calf strength, hip stability, movement re-education, and targeted hands-on massage therapy can help the body move with more balance over time.
If hip or low back tension seems to keep coming back, the missing piece may not be “more stretching.”
It may be figuring out how your feet and ankles are contributing to the pattern.

The hips do a lot of quiet work.
Every step, every squat, every twist — they're driving it.
In this video, we're working through a hip-focused session.
This isn't relaxation work. It's targeted neuromuscular therapy on the muscles that tend to get overloaded by sitting, training, and an active lifestyle.
Here's what a session like this addresses:
✔️ The tension that builds up around the hip from daily movement patterns
✔️ Asymmetries that show up in walking, lifting, and training
✔️ Overactive muscles that need to settle down
✔️ Range of motion, so the rest of the body doesn't have to compensate
When the hips move well, the whole body moves better.
We offer full neuromuscular evaluations and corrective sessions for active adults who want their body to keep up with the life they've built.
Outer-knee tension during runs isn’t always a knee issue. 🏃
One commonly overlooked area is the TFL — the tensor fasciae latae — a small muscle on the front of the hip that connects into the IT band.
When the TFL is overworking, it can contribute to tension patterns through the hip, IT band, and outside of the knee.
That’s why endlessly foam rolling the IT band doesn’t always create lasting change. The IT band may not be the main driver — it may be responding to what’s happening above it.
In this clip, Sylissa is working directly on the TFL to help calm the area, restore better hip balance, and reduce unnecessary pull through the IT band so the leg can move more efficiently.
✔️ Precise work on an often-overlooked hip muscle
✔️ Support for hip and outer-knee tension patterns
✔️ Awareness of the habits that may be feeding the pattern
That’s how you create change that has a better chance of sticking.
For runners dealing with recurring hip or outer-knee tension, there’s usually a movement pattern behind it — and that pattern can be mapped and addressed directly.

⚡️ Most people think low back discomfort starts in the low back.
Sometimes it doesn’t.
A common — and often overlooked — contributor is how the hips and pelvis are moving, loading, and working together.
When one side of the pelvis shifts, rotates, hikes, or loads differently than the other, it can change how force moves through the SI joints, lower lumbar area, glutes, and hips.
That’s why discomfort may keep showing up around the low back, one side of the pelvis, or the upper glute area — especially with standing, walking, bending, or lifting.
The good news?
This kind of pattern can often improve with the right approach.
Simple things like better hip control, mobility work, strength training, movement re-education, and targeted hands-on massage therapy can help the body move with more balance over time.
If low back or SI-area tension seems to keep coming back, the missing piece may not be “more stretching.”
It may be figuring out how your hips and pelvis are contributing to the pattern.

Most people think better neck movement comes from stretching harder.
But the neck usually responds better when you know which areas are limiting the motion in the first place.
That’s why we put together this free Neck Mobility Challenge — a simple way to learn practical movements that support better range of motion, ease, and control through the neck and upper body.
Inside, you’ll walk through gentle, guided exercises designed to help you understand how your neck, shoulders, and spine work together.
No complicated routine.
No forcing.
Just a clear sequence you can follow from home.

Most soft tissue work is rushed.
A quick stretch here. A few minutes on the obvious tight spot. Maybe some general pressure where things feel tense.
But the real work is in the details.
In this session, I’m working through the hip area layer by layer — checking how the tissue responds, finding short and tense muscles, and giving each area enough time to actually release instead of just chasing the spot that feels most noticeable.
A lot of everyday discomfort can come from muscles that are overworking, shortened, or holding tension in places people don’t always expect. That’s why a full soft tissue routine matters.
It’s not just about doing “hip work.”
It’s about taking the time to assess what’s moving well, what’s resisting, and where the body may be asking for more support.
This is the kind of thorough, hands-on work that often gets skipped in faster therapeutic settings — not because it isn’t important, but because there usually isn’t enough time to do it fully.
Here, the detail is the difference.

The upper cervical region is small, sensitive, and very good at letting you know when it’s pi**ed off.
If your neck feels stiff and you keep wanting to “crack” or stretch it, this technique is for you.
Sometimes your neck needs a quick "software update".
This simple muscle energy technique uses:
✔️ Light positioning
✔️ Gentle contraction
✔️ Controlled breathing
✔️ Small eye/head movement
✔️ Repetition without forcing it
The key word is **gentle**.
This is not a “crank your neck until something pops” situation.
The goal is to help your nervous system and muscles find a little more room to move — without picking a fight with your neck like it owes you money.
Upper neck tension can be influenced by: (all stuff discussed in previous slides)
• Screen posture
• Jaw tension
• Eye strain
• Stress
• Breathing patterns

Be mindful: if you have a diagnosed neck condition, recent injury, neurological symptoms, dizziness, instability, or you’re unsure whether this is appropriate for you, discuss it with a qualified healthcare provider first.
If you’re in Temecula/Murrieta and neck tension keeps coming back, we can help you figure out what’s driving it and what to do about it.

Tension has a way of creating a ripple effect.
What starts in one area can sometimes influence how the rest of the body feels — from the neck and shoulders to the jaw, head, arms, and back.
Most of our clients show up with a primary problem area, like neck pain, but as we dive deeper into what they are experiencing, we often find much more.
All of these areas can be related, and trace back to a central problem area.
That’s why at Release Muscle Therapy, we don’t just focus on where discomfort shows up. We look for the pattern behind it.
Because lasting relief starts with understanding the source.
