It is much better for the crops to have a freezing start to spring then a freezing start to summer.

We have never had so many hens laying eggs outside of the nesting area. Maybe they are enjoying the beautiful weather outdoors as much as we are.

How sweet, "red and white" ~ just in time for a festive holiday meal!
Today's humble harvest, I think we will bring in some fresh rosemary and enjoy these over pasta. A simple row cover extends the harvest.

Many cool weather crops can spend an entire winter in the soil, the Maker's pantry. There are a variety of methods to keep them from freezing.
~ Wildlife and the Farm ~ 23 th of Nov 2014 "Bear Morning"
We have great respect for wildlife and know we are very blessed to live where we can enjoy their presence. We have also gone to great lengths to make sure we do not attract them to this little plot of land. Practices have been established to prevent them (as much as possible) from making our farm a part of there feeding route. This is our 9th winter living in the meadow and the first bear crossing that we are aware of.
As you see in the album of pictures below it is not only farm animals or berry vines that bears destroy. The stock fencing keeps out the roaming cattle but determined to walk across the south west side of the property, this bear damaged the fencing in 2 places.
Thanking God for the goodness in each situation is our practice, it is our way of life. Had the bear come across the north west side of the property, it would have passed the goats, chickens and dog housing. We are very thankful that all of our animals are fine.
This morning was a reminder that our way of life is a cycle, not just planting and reaping but building and repairing. A reminder to be forever aware of our surroundings.

How I wish I could express what I am feeling at this moment. It is like the bad dream you knew was coming but your reality seemed to push it back.
