Sarakatsani traditional costumes are deeply symbolic, serving as almost a coded language telling a story of the nomadic, rural life of the Greek mountain shepherds with
genuine Greek origin and roots lost in the centuries. The Sarakatsani are an ancient Greek-speaking community of nomadic shepherds, historically centered in the Pindus mountains. Their most significant concentrations are found in the provinces of Epirus, Thessaly, Macedonia, and Thrace. Sarakatsani communities are also found in bordering Balkan countries. They are regarded as one of Greece’s oldest indigenous populations. the Sarakatsani people still exist today, though they are no longer the nomadic shepherds they historically were.

In this picture, you see the intricate, geometric motifs of the Sarakatsani garments which they are renowned for. These motifs convey information about marital status, social standing, and origin, while some also providing protection against evil shown through their embroidery on their traditional wear and the jewelry worn.
