Week 42 of Running a Military Surplus Company had some seriously cool old school gear come through the warehouse.

In this, we go through a fast overview of some of the better finds from the weekly video, including a London Bridge Trading 75th Ranger jumpable backpack, what appears to be a radio pouch, a 1999 dated buckle, and a strange three-mag bandolier made by Specialty Defense.

The video also shows Marine Corps issue Desert MARPAT blouses, Woodland cold weather jackets, M65 jackets, older rain suit variations, waist packs, and different generations of Alice belt systems. One of the biggest parts of this short is the pallet of straight Woodland gear, including medium Alice packs, older CamelBak style hydration carriers, an ROTC patch, and ROTC M65 jackets with built-in hoods.

This is a quick look at some of the gear from Week 42 of our long form series, where we sort through military surplus, warehouse pallets, field gear, old school Woodland equipment, Marine Corps surplus, and
Army surplus finds.

This is a fast paced overview of our SOF Week 2026 video from Tampa.

In this, we show some of the cooler clips from the event, including weapons displays, large rounds, ammo cans, a 40mm gr***de launcher, unmanned vessels, military boats, a boat four wheeler setup, and a special operations aircraft that was described as originally being based on a crop duster style aircraft.

We also check out Mustang Survival gear, which was especially cool because we have had some of their equipment come through military surplus before.

This short is a quick look at the full SOF Week video, where we walk through the event, check out the gear, and see some of the modern military equipment on display in Tampa.

Quick edit from the SOF Week 2026 airshow demo in Tampa.

This short shows some of the cooler clips we captured from the live demonstration before the full long form video drops. The full video follows our day at SOF Week Tampa, where we checked out military aircraft, boats, unmanned systems, drone technology, weapons displays, Mustang Survival gear, SOCOM flotation equipment, and a lot of modern special operations equipment.

This is not one of our normal warehouse or shipment videos. We took Gear Rack out to SOF Week to see current military technology, special operations gear, and defense equipment up close.

The Navyโ€™s Most Iconic Uniform Almost Disappeared ๐Ÿ‘ปโš“๏ธ | Cracker Jacks Explained ๐Ÿ“
-
-
In 1973, the US. Navy tried to replace one of the most recognizable uniforms in military history: the Cracker Jack uniform.

This short breaks down the history of the Navy Cracker Jack uniform, why it had roots going back to the 1800s, and how many of its details had a practical purpose. Bell bottoms could be rolled up on wet decks or kicked off quickly in the water. The wide back collar, called a tar flap, helped protect the uniform from greased hair. Even the neckerchief had a purpose at sea.

But in 1973, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Elmo Zumwalt pushed a major uniform change. The traditional Cracker Jacks were replaced with a more professional looking suit-and-tie style uniform that included a tailored jacket, collared shirt, and peaked cover.

Sailors hated the change. The replacement uniform was compared to a bus driver outfit, and it also created problems onboard ships. The suit required hanging space that many sailors simply did not have in tight berthing compartments. Jackets wrinkled, covers got crushed, and there was not enough room for garment bags,
The backlash lasted for years. By 1979 to 1980, Admiral Thomas Hayward reversed course and the Cracker Jack uniform returned.

FTHS Helmet, PSGC Vest & Revision Cover ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿช–| Part ๐Ÿฅˆ
๐Ÿ”ดCatch โ€œWeek 41โ€ on YouTube - Gear Rack โ–ถ๏ธ
-
-
Week 41 part 2 focuses on some of the rarest gear we showed in the weekly video.

In this short, we take a look at an FTHS high cut helmet setup that came out of Fort Bragg. This helmet was shown as an untouched Special Forces setup with ear pro, a Wilcox NVG Rhino mount, and the original configuration from how it came in.

We also show an alternate PSGC / Air Warrior vest in UCP. This vest has no zipper for the main front closure, uses buckles instead, has a large front pocket layout, strange diagonal MOLLE, and three sewn on pockets. OD and woodland versions are known, but we could not find much information on this UCP version, so it may be a trial piece, early production version, or just a very uncommon variant.
The last item shown is a Revision UCP helmet cover, another uncommon piece of military surplus gear.

This is part 2 from Week 41 of Running a Military Surplus Company.

Week 41 part 1 had a strong mix of rare military surplus, Marine Corps gear, and collectible uniform pieces.

In this short, we show 75th Ranger Regiment tan berets and talk about getting genuine issue flashes for them before they go up. We also come across another Crye Precision half shirt piece, Marine Corps issued dress blue pants, dress green pants, boonie hats, service cap covers, dress coats, desert boonies, khaki shirts, ASU dress shoes, and a woodland MARPAT blouse.

The finds continue with a Tan 499 woobie / poncho liner, wool blankets, what appears to be a World War II era blanket, a Marine Corps garrison cover, and a test MOLLE 4000 bag.
This is part 1 from Week 41 of running a military surplus company, where we go through the warehouse, check out gear from the pallets, and pull out some of the better items from the week.

๐ŸšจBrand new Unissued Woobies are Back @ GearRack.com ๐Ÿ†•๐Ÿ˜
-
-
The woobie became one of the most loved pieces of U.S, military gear and the basic design has stayed mostly the same for over 60 years. The poncho liner started during the Vietnam War as a lightweight alternative to heavy wool blankets that held water, smelled bad, and were not ideal for jungle conditions.

The woobie used thin insulation sewn between nylon ripstop fabric, making it light, fast drying, and much easier to use in the field. It could also be tied into an issued poncho to create a quick sleeping setup that worked better in wet environments.

Even as uniforms, gear, and camouflage patterns changed, the woobie stayed popular. The Marine Corps version uses woodland MARPAT and adds a zipper around the blanket, while the Army version keeps the classic poncho liner design and has also been issued in OCP.

We just restocked brand new, unissued 1990s woobies still sealed in their original boxes at gearrack.com

If you miss yours, check us out for real military surplus gear!

The Army Spent Millions on a Camo That Didnโ€™t Work ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ˜ญ
-
-
Why did the U.S. Army switch to UCP?

In this video, we break down how the Army ended up adopting the Universal Camouflage Pattern, better known as UCP or ACU camo. In the early 2000s, the Marines had just introduced MARPAT, digital camouflage looked futuristic, and the Army wanted one single pattern that could replace older uniforms like Woodland M81 and Desert Ill Color.

The idea sounded good on paper. One universal camouflage pattern would simplify logistics, reduce the need for multiple uniforms, and give soldiers a modern digital camo pattern. The problem was that UCP was not actually one of the patterns tested during the Army camouflage trials from 2002 to 2004. Instead, the untested gray-green pixelated pattern was adopted anyway.

Soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan noticed the issues quickly. UCP stood out against sand, stood out against trees, and became one of the most criticized camouflage patterns the U.S. military ever issued. Years later, one of the patterns that had been tested, Scorpion, would be reworked and eventually become OCP.

UCP is a major part of modern U.S. Army uniform history, military surplus history, and camouflage collecting. Whether you love it, hate it, or think it only worked on office furniture, it is one of the most recognizable patterns of the GWOT era.
