🌡️ Stay Cool, Pierce County! 🌡️

With warmer temperatures here, Pierce Transit is helping community members stay safe by offering FREE rides to cooling centers and designated cooling locations through June 16. If you or someone you know needs a place to escape the heat, transportation shouldn't be a barrier.

At MDC, we encourage everyone to check on neighbors, older adults, individuals with health conditions, and those without access to air conditioning. A cool place to rest and hydrate can make all the difference during a heat event.

Think back to one of the hardest moments in your life. Who showed up?

A teacher?
A parent?
A neighbor?
A friend?
A complete stranger?

What did that support mean, and after all these years, how important was it to have them in that very moment? That's what MDC does. We show up.

Let's spend today thanking the people who helped us keep going. 💙

Aviva Crossing Opens Its Doors: A New Chapter for Families in Tacoma - MDC 06/10/2026

What does affordable housing really mean?

For some, it means a shorter commute. For others, it means being able to afford groceries, childcare, or school supplies without wondering how the rent will get paid. For many families, it means stability for the first time in a very long time.

We were honored to celebrate the grand opening of Aviva Crossing, a new affordable housing community in Tacoma's West End that will provide 129 affordable apartment homes, nearly half designed for families with two- and three-bedroom units. Located directly across from Tacoma Community College and the transit center, residents will have access to education, transportation, shopping, healthcare, and community resources right outside their front door.

At MDC, we believe what our CEO John Hurley shared during the event, "Housing changes lives, but housing combined with supportive services changes futures."

We're proud to partner with Mercy Housing Northwest, Tacoma Housing Authority, Tacoma Public Schools, and so many others to help ensure families have access to the resources, support, and opportunities they need to thrive.

Today, Aviva Crossing welcomes its first residents. Tomorrow, it becomes home.
