Here at Source Yoga, we want to take the time to honor, reflect and celebrate Juneteenth.

Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 and the Confederate army surrendered to the Union army in April 1865, Black enslaved folks in Texas could not exercise their freedom until June 19, 1865. On that date, Union General Gordon Granger led some 2,000 Union troops, many of them Black, into Galveston Bay, where they announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as “Juneteenth,” deriving it’s name from combining “June” and “nineteenth”.

Happy Juneteenth.🎊

5 Benefits of Yoga maybe you don’t know about:

✨Vagal Tone & Nervous System

Slow breathing and certain poses stimulate the Vagas Nerve, improving heart rate variability and your body’s ability to shift out of fight or flight.

Sources: Tyagi & Cohen, “Yoga & Heart Rate Variability: A comprehensive review,” PubMed(2016), Zou et al., “Effects of Mind-Body Exercises on Heart Rate Variability,” Journal of Clinical Medicine(2018)

✨Bone Density

Weight-bearing poses like plank, warrior, and tree pose put mechanical stress on bones in ways that can support density, especially relevant to post-menopause.

✨Pain Perception Changes

Regular practice has been linked to measurable changes in how the brain processes chronic pain signals, not just “distraction” from pain.

Source: NIH Intramural Research Program: “Yoga Helps Pain & Brain”, Irp.nih.gov

✨May Support Lymphatic Flow

Twists and inversions are thought to help move lymph fluid, supporting immune function
(though research is still ongoing).

✨Proprioception & Fall Prevention

Balance poses improve your sense of body position in space, which becomes increasingly important as you age.

Push Prep: A Pelvic Floor Birth Workshop

With Physical Therapist Mandi Murtaugh

For pregnant folks in the 2nd or 3rd trimester with one support person (partner, doula, or other birth support person)

Saturday, June 27, 2-4pm

Cost: $150

Location: Source Yoga

There are many things we can’t practice to prepare for labor. We can’t practice what a contraction feels like, or crowning, or really pushing. BUT–there are things we can practice so that your body isn’t totally surprised when labor hits.

At the end of this workshop, you will feel more prepared for birth because you’ve learned:

How to practice relaxing your pelvic floor in labor.

Perineal stretching–what it is and what it isn’t (hint: it’s not torture!)
What positions you can labor and push in, what to practice, and what you do and don’t like.

How to effectively push when the time comes.

Your partner will learn:

How to help you prepare your pelvic floor for birth.

Hands-on techniques to open the pelvis during labor, which help with pain management and ease the way for the baby’s emergence.

Dr. Mandi Murtaugh, PT, DPT, WCS (she/her) is a board-certified Pelvic Health Physical Therapist dedicated to working collaboratively with you to help you live your healthiest, fullest life. Whether that means caring for your family, hiking in the woods, or enjoying intimacy with your partner, her goal is to support you in doing the things you love—without limitations.

Her passion lies in supporting individuals through all stages of the childbearing years, from those navigating pelvic pain or fertility challenges, through pregnancy and the fourth trimester, and into the wisdom of peri- and post-menopause. She believes each stage of life brings its own unique gifts and challenges, and strives to honor the cyclical nature of life while empowering you to move through each phase with grace and ease.

Mindfulness vs Meditation

What is the difference?

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment—aware of where you are, what you’re doing, and how you’re feeling, without judgment.

It’s about slowing down, noticing your thoughts and surroundings, and gently guiding your attention back to the here and now.

Meditation is a formal practice, a dedicated time where you usually sit or lie down(or any shape that allows you to be comfortable and focus your attention)with the intention of training attention and awareness. It is a structured activity with a beginning and end.

some distinctions:

• Mindfulness is a way of being, it can happen at anytime.

• You can be mindful without formally meditating(fully present while walking, or gardening for example)

• Many meditation styles like breath awareness, body scans, loving-kindness, are specifically designed to strengthen mindfulness capactiy.

• Some meditation practices aren’t mindfulness based (mantra repetition, guided meditation, body scan meditation, certain concentration practices)

Where they meet:

observer
breath as anchor
beginner’s mind
the gap before reaction

Do you find one easier? Do you practice both?

There's something spacious about giving yourself permission to begin again—not as a failure but as an act of self compassion.

Mindfulness teaches us that every moment is a new beginning. The present moment is always available.

It's okay to start again. Let go of what you can't control.
Take a moment to breathe. Reset your space, reset your mind. Focus on what truly matters. You've got this!
