Welcome to our 9th edition of Throwback Thursday! Each week we’ll try to highlight one of our available items that are vintage, antique or just old and weird, maybe with a little of its history thrown in.

You Old House owners may have some heavy old double hung windows that just won’t stay up. Or maybe you’re one of the lucky ones whose windows still work, but wondering what marvel of old construction makes yours still open, close and stay up easily?
Window counterweights are the secret. Their use started in Europe in the 1600s to move really heavy timber windows! And they were installed right up to the mid 1900s. My old 1920’s house still had a few of them that worked, but mostly I just found the old cords cut & hanging forlornly!

We have an assortment of weights 6 or 8 lbs. And here’s how they work!

Throwback Thursday Price $10 each. Get another 10% off if you mention at the register you saw this on Throwback Thursday! (This item only)

Welcome to our 8th edition of Throwback Thursday! Each week we’ll try to highlight one of our available items that are vintage, antique or just old and weird, maybe with a little of its history thrown in.

This week’s pick is a glorious mahogany late Victorian parlor or dining chair. The woodwork is beautiful. It was reupholstered in 1977 for a Syracuse resident in the Meadowbrook area and is still in great condition. But if that’s not your style it would be spectacular with either a period fabric or even a very modern take!

Late Victorian pieces like this were characterized by their ornate, elaborate carvings. Besides the Victorian style, how can we help date something like this? It’s said “the devil is in the details” when looking for clues in construction or finishes. Here it’s in the caster wheels, patented in Feb 13, 1894.
