The standard deduction for single taxpayers and married couples filing separately is $6,350 in 2017, up from $6,300 in 2016; for married couples filing jointly, the standard deduction is $12,700, up $100 from the prior year; and for heads of households, the standard deduction is $9,350 for 2017, up from $9,300.

The IRS is reminding tax payers that 2017 tax filing season starts on Jan. 23.

The IRS says they will start accepting electronic tax returns that day. The department is expecting more than 152 million tax returns to be filed in 2017. Next year’s filing deadline is April 18 because April 15 falls on a weekend.

New for 2017, the IRS is holding refunds claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Additional Child Tax Credit until Feb. 15; that means taxpayers may not actually have access to their refund until the week of Feb. 27.

The IRS recommends taxpayers keep copies of their prior-year tax returns for at least three years.
