Todo comenzó cuando encontró una foto de la sábana en Internet y “no podía imaginar cómo estábamos viendo una fotografía del propio Jesús”.

Our Gospel today gives us a beautiful glimpse into an ordinary moment in the daily ministry of Jesus. We see his tender love and compassion for his disciples and the people who followed him. Last Sunday we heard Jesus send his apostles out for the first time.
In our Gospel we hear the apostles coming back from their missionary journey — they’re excited! They want to tell Jesus what happened to them, but it seems a lot of people followed the apostles back — we hear of a “vast crowd” gathered by the Sea of Galilee.
Jesus tells the apostles today: “Come away by yourselves to a desert place and rest a while.” It’s beautiful to reflect on the friendship that Jesus has with his apostles and how he wants that same friendship with each one of us.
Jesus wants every soul to rest in him. He knows that every one of us is looking for peace. St. Paul tells us today: “For he is our peace.” Jesus is our peace, Jesus is our rest. St. Augustine said that the human heart is restless until it rests in the Lord.
The Gospel also tells us that the crowds gathered were like “sheep without a shepherd.” And the prophet Jeremiah tells us that God will never leave his people: “I will appoint shepherds for them who will shepherd them so that they need no longer fear and tremble…”
Jesus knows that we can become like sheep without a shepherd — anxious and worried about many things. We can become burdened and restless without him. He is calling us today, as our shepherd, to turn to him — to rest in him.
We need to seek out the friendship that the apostles had with Jesus — taking the time to build a personal friendship with Jesus. It doesn’t have to be long, just making sure that we are carving out quiet time each day in the middle of our tasks, to be alone with Jesus — to rest in him.
