The goal of every user experience designer is to ensure that people have a great time while using their products. Personalization tailors the user experience of people based on their interests, browsing history, and preferences.

This includes smarter algorithms and more experiences tailored to the interests of users. Some plaforms use recommendation engines and customized user interfaces as personalized touches.

For example, Google allows users to customize their Chrome user interface, changing things like themes, colors, appearance, etc. Platforms like Netflix and Spotify analyze your past behaviour (movies watched, songs listened to), to suggest content they think you’ll enjoy. These are real-life examples of personalized user experience.

Researchers at Microsoft and GitHub Inc. have conducted an in-depth study into the challenges, opportunities, and needs associated with building AI-powered product copilots. The research involved interviews with 26 professional software engineers from various companies responsible for developing these advanced tools. 🎓💻

The race to embed advanced AI capabilities into products is on, with virtually every technology company looking to add these features to their software; however, many problems remain. Orchestrating multiple data sources and prompts can increase the risk of failure cases while testing LLMs is difficult due to their inherent variability. Developers also struggle to keep up with best practices in this rapidly evolving field, often resorting to social media or academic papers for guidance. Safety, privacy, and compliance are major concerns that require careful management to avoid potential damage or breaches. 🔍🛡🔒

Google is famous for having a million similar products with confusingly different names and seemingly nothing in common. (Can I interest you in a messaging app?) But when it comes to its AI work, going forward there is only one name that matters: Gemini.

The company announced on Thursday that it is renaming its Bard chatbot to Gemini, releasing a dedicated Gemini app for Android, and even folding all its Duet AI features in Google Workspace into the Gemini brand. It also announced that Gemini Ultra 1.0 — the largest and most capable version of Google’s large language model — is being released to the public.

Gemini’s mobile apps will likely be the place most people encounter the new tool. If you download the new app on Android, it can set Gemini as your default assistant, meaning it replaces Google Assistant as the thing that responds when you say, “Hey Google” or long-press your home button. So far, it doesn’t seem Google is getting rid of Assistant entirely, but the company has been deprioritizing Assistant for a while now, and it clearly believes Gemini is the future. “I think it’s a super important first step towards building a true AI assistant,” says Sissie Hsiao, who runs Bard (now Gemini) at Google. “One that is conversational, it’s multimodal, and it’s more helpful than ever before.”
