Congratulations to Sun Prairie East sophomore Grace Berens, who took first place in the Food Science & Technology event at the Wisconsin Future Farmers of America (FFA) Career Development Event competition at Madison College on April 17.

Berens is the first individual state winner in food science from Sun Prairie East, according to agricultural education teacher and FFA adviser Josh Capodarco.

This is Berens’ second year on the food science team, Capodarco said. Her score was 19 points higher than the second-place finisher. She finished sixth in state a year ago and was part of the third-place team. The team took third this year, behind Cadott and Denmark.

Dr. Antoine Reed will take over as SPASD’s superintendent on July 1. Each week we are going to highlight Dr. Reed’s past experiences so our community can get to know him.

His second professional administrative position in education was an assistant principal and 7-12 grade manager at Acero Schools in Rogers Park, Ill. He held the position for more than 3 years.

“Through coaching, data-driven instruction, and culturally responsive teaching, we improved NWEA scores by 60% and reduced suspensions by 25%. The hands-on, student-centered Montessori approach deepened my understanding of differentiated instruction and project-based learning, both of which continue to inform my leadership philosophy today.

“Working with a $7 million budget that included a federal school improvement grant, I also helped strengthen early academic interventions and teacher development systems, ensuring we reached students before they fell behind."
