Thanks to the Beacon Fire Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Paytas Contracting, we will unveil a historical marker for our headquarters, the 1741 Carter House, on Tuesday, November 19th, at 10 a.m. Following the unveiling, the celebration will continue with refreshments and sweet treats.

Come visit the Carter House this weekend during the 30th Annual Four Centuries in a Weekend, this Saturday, October 19th, and Sunday, October 20th, from noon to 5 p.m. Sponsored by the Union County Cultural Heritage Commission, this event features tours of historic buildings throughout Union County, including our headquarters, the Carter House, built in 1741.

It houses the town's historical archive and collection of artifacts from the Summit’s history—from its earliest days before the American Revolution to the 1830s, when the first train arrived, to the 1920s, when our Chemical Engine No.1 was fighting fires—to the present. There will be something for the whole family to enjoy!

Are you looking for information about the house you are currently living in? Are you wondering what Summit streets were on a map 75 years ago? Are you interested in postcards from the early days? The Summit Historical Society can answer all these questions and MANY more.

Our mission is to preserve and educate. We have records, documents, books, and artifacts related to Summit History and most of them are kept in the Carter House which is believed to be the oldest existing building in Summit. Pictured are the bookcases and files which contain a vast amount of information.

From September to June, come visit the Carter House on Tuesdays from 9-12 and Wednesdays from 1-4. We can also accommodate appointments.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! The Carter House will be closed from December 21st through January 1st. We will happily reopen at 9 am on Tuesday, January 2nd.

We will then be back to our regular hours which will be Tuesdays from 9 am to 12 pm, and Wednesdays from 1 pm to 4pm. Come visit the Carter House to see our collection of Summit artifacts and to explore our extensive archives which include photographs, Summit house files, historic surveys, maps, newspapers, postcards, yearbooks, Summit directories, and so much more. Lots to see and explore, so make a date to visit this winter.
