Last 2 years we have been having the Hood Merganser nesting in our Wood Duck box. I usually check my box for repairs and add fresh wood shavings around this time of year but the female had other ideas. As I approached the box, getting very close, the female flew out of box as you can see in the pic! I scared her, she scared me! Opened box slowly and could see 8 white eggs! We typically get 1 chance at seeing the ducklings with the female on the water and can take 1 picture. Female is very secretive with her young.This is the time to be checking your duck box or put one up. Migration is full swing. We have Wood Duck Nesting boxes ready to sell at $50.00 each. Guess I'm getting rather anxious for our Purple Martins to return. I know people in the vicinity have seen their Scout, but I have not yet. I'm ready. Looking back at my notes from 20 years, the average arrival date is today. So, I normal wait to see my Scout before putting up a few gourds, decide today to raise 1 gourd. I have put fresh White Pine needles inside gourd.Its time, Marty! We love to sit on our deck with ☕️ in the morning, listening to the dawn song. Can't wait. With nesting season almost upon us alot of us experience the troubles the male House Sparrow with our Bluebirds. He takes over the nest, with killing the female Bluebird, eggs or nestlings..then they build a nest in the box. So....from Ned's Nesting Boxes we offer a Sparrow trap with a cage and a hole size reducer. Typically if the male is perched on roof, claiming box you insert the trap and within 15 minutes, he's yours. They are a non native species, so it is not against the law to terminate them. These traps work well in a salt box designed nesting box. Traps sell for $25.00. Nesting boxes are also available for $35.00.

Here another idea and a good one that should help control your House Sparrow problem. Been selling quite afew this spring. The theory is that this style bluebird box allows light into the box, which House Sparrow do not like. They prefer a dark cavity. We use a twin chambered polycarbonate cover, used to make greenhouses. This protects from harmful UV rays and helps with temperature control.
