June is doing double duty in the garden π±
Most gardeners focus on what can be planted right now, but June is also the time to start thinking ahead to your fall harvest.
πΏ **Direct sow outdoors now:**
β’ Green beans β plant every few weeks for a steady harvest through summer.
β’ Cucumbers and summer squash β a June planting helps replace vines lost later in the season.
β’ Beets and carrots β best sown directly into the garden since root disturbance can affect growth.
β’ Okra β thrives in hot weather and loves summer heat.
β’ Southern peas β productive plants that also help improve soil fertility.
π± **Start indoors for fall harvests:**
β’ Broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower β start now and transplant later for cool-season production.
β’ Brussels sprouts β a long-season crop that benefits from cooler temperatures and light frosts.
β’ Kale β excellent for fall and winter harvests, with flavor that improves after frost.
β’ Lettuce β summer heat can hinder germination, making indoor starts a great option.
A simple rule to remember: if a crop develops a deep taproot, sow it directly where it will grow. If it needs cool weather to finish strong, start it now so it's ready for fall. πΏπ

Many effective garden amendments can come from materials that would otherwise be discarded. Kitchen scraps, compost, and other natural resources can help support healthy soil and plant growth.
Organic matter improves soil structure, supports beneficial microbes, and helps retain moisture. Healthy soil often produces stronger plants that are better equipped to handle environmental stresses.
Different materials contribute different nutrients, making diversity valuable when building soil fertility naturally. Compost, plant matter, and other organic inputs work together to support long-term soil health.
The most productive gardens often begin beneath the surface, where healthy soil creates the foundation for everything that grows above it. π»

Grow bags work best when the plant has enough room πͺ΄ A simple size guide I like to follow:
π± 1-gallon bags for smaller herbs.
π₯¬ 3-gallon bags for greens and green onions.
πΆοΈ 5-gallon bags for peppers, beans, and compact crops.
π
10-gallon bags for tomatoes, cucumbers, kale, and zucchini.
π₯ 15-gallon bags for deeper or heavier feeders like potatoes, carrots, okra, and dwarf fruit trees.
One thing I always watch with grow bags is watering, because they dry out faster than regular pots.
Found these helpful tips for when to plant what. Always plant according to your grow zone and do a soil test before planting (usually done in the late fall to overwinter the bed if not using it).
Happy gardening!!!π©πΎβπΎπ₯° γviralγ·
