Sentara Obici Hospital, a 175-bed acute care hospital, is located on Godwin Boulevard in Suffolk. As the community grows, so does Sentara Obici Hospital.

While it opened its state-of-the-art facility in 2002 and merged with Sentara Healthcare in 2006, the hospital continues a 50-year tradition of providing residents of Suffolk and Western Tidewater with patient-centered care in an environment that focuses on healing. In June 2010, Sentara Obici Hospital opened a new three-story, 64,380 square-foot wing with all private beds serving orthopedic, medical and surgical patients.

All hospitals have a history. Few have their founder and namesake still at the heart of it.

Tucked inside Sentara Obici Hospital is the Heritage Garden, the final resting place of Amedeo Obici and his beloved wife, Louise.

Amedeo, founder of Planters Peanuts, built the original Louise Obici Memorial Hospital in her honor after her passing. His one request was that he and Louise always remain at the hospital. When the hospital moved to its current location, they moved too.

Now, more than 25 years after the Heritage Garden was established at our current campus, the space has been thoughtfully renovated with new landscaping, pavers, seating areas and improved drainage — creating a peaceful retreat for patients, visitors and team members alike. All while preserving and showcasing the Obici memorial.

Here are photos from a recent rededication and reception we held at the garden with our hospital community.

Not everyone has reliable access to healthy food when they leave the hospital or return home. That’s why we’ve brought something new to our campus in partnership with Suffolk Christian Fellowship Center: a community food locker designed to help bridge that gap.

Located outside our Emergency Department entrance, the weatherproof, refrigerated locker provides 24/7 access to fresh, nutritious food for patients being discharged and community members experiencing food insecurity.

With a simple access code provided through our hospital or partner organization, individuals can pick up food at a time that works for them, even outside traditional pantry hours.

This effort is about more than convenience. It’s about dignity, access, and supporting better health beyond our hospital walls. 🍎❤️

To every member of our care teams: well done. Your work matters. Your commitment to safety saves lives. 💙

The MRI upgrade at Sentara BelleHarbour is complete! 🎉

The new next-generation scanner delivers sharper images and cuts some scan times in half. A prostate scan that took 90 minutes? Now takes about 45!

That's a big difference for patient comfort and getting results to your doctor faster. It also means shorter wait times for our patients.

A big thanks to our BelleHarbour radiology team for the work they do every day and for supporting this transition: MRI technologists Kenneth Holley, Jenny Flanagan, Alicia Duffy and Travis Winston, and Manager of Radiology Daryl Minggia. 👏

The Advanced Imaging Center at Sentara BelleHarbour is open seven days a week, 6:15 a.m. to 11 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call 757-983-0010.

Five Sentara hospitals just earned the 2026 Patient Safety Excellence Award by Healthgrades, demonstrating safer care and better outcomes.

This recognition places them among the top 10% of hospitals nationwide for patient safety, highlighting a strong track record of reducing complications and prioritizing safe, high-quality care. ✨

It also means patients treated at these hospitals are far less likely to experience preventable safety events, with safety built into every step of the patient experience.

Congratulations to the teams whose commitment to patient safety continues to set the standard. 💙
