This sweet girl returned to training to work on her reactivity around other dogs. Harper absolutely loves making friends and would happily go say hello to every dog she sees if she could! Sometimes that excitement can make leash walks a little challenging when the leash prevents her from greeting everyone.
Harper jumped into training with Ally (and her first trainer, Shana) to practice staying calm and quiet while watching other dogs at a distance. She made fantastic progress, learning that she doesn't need to rush over to every dog she sees. She even was able to walk right up close to another dog without pulling or reacting at all!
We're so proud of her hard work and impulse control. Keep up the good work Harper!

A friendly reminder from your local dog behavior experts:
𝗗𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 - 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 - 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴'𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀.
The idea that your dog is trying to be alpha over you or others has been debunked a long time, yet many people - including those calling themselves trainers - still use this term to explain dog behavior.
Your dog's jumping, hu***ng, barking or aggression is not dominance.
Trying to be dominant over your dog causes conflict, not a healthy relationship.
Your dog's behavior has a FUNCTION - to keep them safe, gain access to things they want and avoid things they dislike. Their needs are rooted in survival and wellbeing, not ruling the world.
Dominance has no place in dog training.

We're also wishing a big congratulations to Opie on his graduation today! There isn't a minute that Opie is here where he doesn't have a big ol' grin on his face! He's the happiest puppy around, thrilled to get attention from trainers or wrestle with a few other pups. He's learned so much with us and we will miss his smile and cuddles the most! Congratulations Opie!!
We've spent the better part of the past year working with Buttercup on a variety of skills, including curbing her stranger danger, reducing her reactivity, and teaching her confidence in new situations! After a visit to the vet that resulted in a lot of barking and very little actual treatment, we've switched gears to cooperative care!
When training at the vet started, it was slow going. Buttercup can take time to trust new situations, so the first several sessions were just her and Kailey in a room at the vet, practicing being touched and handled. Over the course of training, she's welcomed Kailey in to her circle and allows her to do all the handling needed, so we know it's just a matter of time before she lets her new vet friends do the same! Buttercup thrives on predictability to learn new things are safe, so each session starts and runs the same way, with us slowly adding in new pieces and putting on the brakes when she says so, without the need for her to bark or bite.
This video shows her most recent practice session at Bay East Animal Hospital. Here she shows off her ability to lay in lateral while Dr. Skaletski approaches her and listens to her heart and prepares for future blood draws. Six months ago, it would have been impossible for Buttercup to walk into the room without a reaction, much less let her vet examine her. Now she's learned that vet visits are safe (and full of so many pork chops and steak and ball for her!) and she's now being set up for a lifetime of easier veterinary care.
Huge thank you Dr. Skaletski and the staff at Bay East who have welcomed us in to use their facilities and borrow their staff for practice session! This progress wouldn't be possible without them!

We wrapped up our Wednesday graduating our first Level 2 Group Class! These kids *showed off* today doing solid stays with big distractions, heeling patterns and nailing their "go to place" for a door knock.
A couple pups had to miss tonight but we're so proud of every dog and human who leaped into Level 2!
