The River Project
Working for a living Los Angeles River, nourished by a healthy watershed. Economics and morals require that we do this before nature does it for us.
The climate and ecological emergency require the courage to redesign our urban systems. Watershed management shows us how to work with nature rather than against it to provide for public health and safety without sacrificing commonly held resources or destroying beneficial ecosystem processes.

"By the year 2050...many places around the world, including in the U.S., are going to experience the historical once in a hundred year flood level once a year or more frequently...Places like Los Angeles..."
60 Minutes on Twitter ““Places like Los Angeles, San Diego, Key West, Miami, Jacksonville, Savannah, Honolulu” are all at risk of severe floods as a result of climate change, says geosciences professor Michael Oppenheimer. https://t.co/LHpWp6PRg1 https://t.co/kjbPoLqSJI”

It's 2020 & its time to change the way we think about disposables! AB No. 619 is the new CA statewide law that allows food vendors to serve customers in reusable containers & lets the public bring reusable containers to restaurants for take-out. Spread the word to your family and friends and encourage them to bring reusables with them, too! ♻️🍱

The consequences of climate change are bound to get worse. What was different about 2019 was the response to climate change. More people started clamoring for a Green New Deal, Democratic presidential candidates began talking fluently about the crisis & young climate activists took to the streets to demand action!
Birth strike, flygskam, Pyrocene: The words that defined our planet in 2019 2019 was a wild year for the climate — and the English lexicon.

To live in CA over the last decade meant enduring a steady procession of weather-related disasters. The wildfires were more destructive, the drought was the longest on record, & the storms, when they finally came, unleashed more water than our dams could contain. Scientists say there’s no doubt that climate change has amplified the extreme events of the last decade, mostly because the state’s average temperature is rising.
California, climate change and the trauma of the last decade After 10 years of fires, droughts and storms in California, the state's residents are panicking about climate change.

100 cities account for nearly 1/5 of our global carbon footprint. 3 of the top 10 are in the U.S: NY(3), LA(5) & Chicago(8)-these cities alone make up ~10% of U.S. emissions. High population and high income drive high-consumption lifestyles that make cities disproportionately high emitters.
Cities Aren’t Waiting for a Federal Green New Deal Activists are pushing sweeping climate action at the local level.

Happy Holidays from all of us here at TRP! Together, we: broke up concrete, built healthy soils, planted 1000s of native plants, built 50 parkway basins & began retrofits on 20 homes that will capture rain, sequester CO2, build biodiversity & mitigate flood risk in LA. We delivered 18 hands-on Water LA workshops & facilitated community participation for the Upper LA River & Tributaries Plan. We advocated for the establishment of a Climate Emergency Mobilization Dep. & an Office of Racial Equity, & helped shape the County’s Sustainability Plan. In the new year, we will continue to engage in collaborative action to support a climate-resilient future for LA – one that is regenerative, equitable, & just. Join us as we prepare LA to adapt and thrive through 21st century challenges & into this new decade.

“A government that is not actively protecting its citizens from the future challenges of climate change (property loss, food system collapse, increased intensity of storms, flooded infrastructure, extreme heat, economic disruption) is not acting in the interests of its citizens. A politician who delays climate action is not acting in his or her constituents’ best interests, and may be going so far as to actually cause harm.”
What I learned writing about climate change and the US south for a year I crisscrossed a region – my own – that is mired in a culture of denial and delay. The conversation on the climate crisis has not changed fast enough
