Royal Doulton Mr. Micawber D5843 Table Lighter, manufactured and sold between 1958 and 1959.
The ceramic base depicts Wilkins Micawber, a famous character from Charles Dickens’s novel David Copperfield. He is immediately recognizable by his signature black top hat, green coat, and blue polka-dot bow tie.
Royal Doulton originally designed the “Mr. Micawber” character jug in the late 1930s, but they specifically adapted a handful of their popular character designs into table lighters starting in 1958. This specific lighter adaptation was only produced for a very short window from 1958 to 1959.
