Holiday Pathology!
Some tumors are stranger than fiction...
This ovarian mass from a dog was diagnosed as a teratoma, an interesting but benign tumor that develops from germ cells capable of differentiating into tissues from multiple embryonic germ layers.
Under the microscope (and even grossly), this tumor contained an incredible assortment of tissues, including:
Cartilage 🦴
Neuroparenchyma (brain tissue) ðŸ§
Epithelial acini
Haired skin
And a large cyst packed with keratin and hair!
Teratomas are fascinating because they can contain mature, well-differentiated tissues that have no business being in the o***y. It's essentially a biological grab bag, with skin, nervous tissue, bone, cartilage, muscle, glands, and even teeth occasionally making an appearance.
Cases like this are a reminder of just how extraordinary biology can be.
