With Fall Season on the horizon I want to talk about just one more reason why native plants are so important in regards to their value to wildlife, specifically in this post to migratory birds.

In the Fall, migratory birds need massive amounts of energy to fuel long journeys. Native plants respond by producing berries that are exceptionally rich in lipids (fats). Exotic or invasive plants, by contrast, often provide mostly sugar water, which does not sustain birds over long distances. It's not the fault of the ornamental or non-native plant its' simply that they have evolved to provide different nutrients for a different hemisphere. For instance, Brazilian Pepper - a plant that offers quite a few berries to birds, in Brazil this plant would be transitioning from Winter to Spring when Birds would be raising babies and the priority shifts to immediate energy for active insects, nesting birds, and emerging pollinators. Plants produce nectar packed with easily digestible sugars (sucrose, glucose, and fructose) to power high-metabolism activities.

Plant Native to provide healthy fats that can fuel the 30 million recorded birds that fly over Florida during Fall migration!

We will also be joined by Jessica Milazzo of Sow Blessed Farm, where she will be selling human food grown and harvested in our own hemisphere's season. What's good for you and the birds is good for the planet!

Just me and our baby peacock 🦚
We adopted this baby shortly after we welcomed the turkeys on our farm.
We tried to put them in the same house, but the turkeys attacked her so we separated her immediately. Her head is healing nicely and she now has her own outdoor area until she gets bigger.

Any name suggestions? I was thinking Little Pea 🫛
