Our instructor, Judy Coates Perez, had her Facebook and Instagram accounts hacked last week. The hacker attempted to extort $500 from her, and Meta subsequently disabled her accounts.

Many of you know that the same thing happened to my personal account. I understand firsthand how frightening and frustrating it is—and how difficult it can be to reach an actual person at Meta for help.

After 16 years of building her online community and connecting with more than 33,500 followers, Judy suddenly lost access to everything. She has asked friends and colleagues with overlapping followers to help spread the word so people will know what happened and where they can find her.

Sakiori Weaving & Sashiko Stitching with Atsusko Chirikjian ✨

There is something deeply moving about cloth that carries a history.

In this beautiful new workshop with Atsuko Chirikjian, students will explore the relationship between boro, sakiori, and sashiko through processes of repair, reconstruction, weaving, and stitch.

Using worn or meaningful fabrics brought from home, participants will transform old textiles into richly layered surfaces and hand-stitched boro-inspired pouches that honor both material and memory.

🧵 Learn traditional Japanese-inspired techniques including:
• Sakiori rag weaving
• Sashiko stitching
• Layering & patching
• Textile reconstruction
• Boro aesthetics & visible mending

No loom or weaving experience required — Atsuko will teach students how to create a simple handmade loom during class.

There is no single type of Aya artist.

Some arrive as experienced fiber artists. Others come with curiosity and a desire to try something completely new. Some travel across the country to study with a favorite instructor, while others discover us close to home.

They are stitchers, dyers, printers, quilters, book artists, surface designers, mixed-media artists and lifelong learners.

What brings them together is a love of working with their hands, a desire to learn and the willingness to give themselves dedicated time to create.

You do not need to be a professional artist to attend a workshop at Aya. You only need to be curious.
