More than 300 dogs went into the aftermath of 9/11 to do something humans could not do alone: search through an enormous field of unstable rubble using their noses.

After the World Trade Center towers collapsed on September 11, 2001, specially trained dogs arrived at Ground Zero with handlers from across the United States. Some searched for the scent of survivors, while others were trained to locate human remains. Police and therapy dogs also served at the site.

The conditions were dangerous. Search dogs climbed twisted steel, broken concrete and shifting debris while fires continued to smolder beneath the pile. Some teams worked shifts lasting up to 12 hours, and veterinarians regularly cleaned the dogs’ paws, eyes and noses.

One of those dogs was Bretagne, a two-year-old Golden Retriever deployed with handler Denise Corliss and Texas Task Force 1. Ground Zero was their first disaster deployment together, and they spent days searching the wreckage.

But the dogs ended up serving another purpose that wasn't written into every search assignment.

Exhausted firefighters and recovery workers would stop to pet them, talk to their handlers or simply spend a quiet moment beside them. Dedicated therapy dogs were also brought in to provide comfort.

The dogs could not change what happened that day, but alongside their handlers, they kept searching through conditions few had ever trained to face.

Their part in the story of September 11 deserves to be remembered too.
