At Creager Performance Horses, we believe the foundation of every great foal starts long before they ever hit the ground…it starts with the mare.

That’s why we prioritize our broodmares’ care before pregnancy, throughout gestation, and after foaling.

Our broodmares live the way a horse was meant to live - outside in the pasture, moving naturally, staying mentally relaxed, and maintaining good body condition without being overmanaged. Closer to foaling, they are moved into a disinfected stall barn.

Top 5 Things Every Foaling Kit Should Have (Don’t Foal Without These!)

Foaling season is exciting… until it isn’t.
Things can go from normal to emergency in a matter of minutes, and having a foaling kit ready before that mare lays down can make all the difference.

Here are the Top 5 MUST-HAVES that should be in every foaling kit:

1. E***a
Meconium impaction is one of the most common issues in newborn foals. Having an e***a ready can save you from a long, uncomfortable night for that baby.

2. Chlorhexidine or Betadine + Dip Cup
Dipping the navel immediately after birth is one of the easiest ways to prevent serious infections like navel ill and joint ill.

3. Clean Towels + Disposable Gloves
You want clean hands and clean equipment if you need to assist. Towels are also great for drying and stimulating the foal if needed.

4. Thermometer
A quick temperature check can help you catch infection or illness early. When a foal is “off,” a thermometer is one of the first tools you’ll need.

5. Colostrum Backup
Frozen colostrum or a high-quality colostrum replacer can literally save a foal’s life if the mare leaks early, doesn’t have enough milk, or the foal struggles to nurse.
