If you could sum up our week at Daytona International Speedway and the start of our 2022 IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season in one word, that word would be (relatively) smooth. After a strong weekend of testing during The Roar, the team moved into a trio of soggy practice sessions for the 4-hour BMW M Endurance Challenge. Knowing they could reference data gathered during The Roar, drivers William Tally and Tristan Herbert both logged conservative laps in the wet sessions.
For qualifying, the team opted to put 2022 Daytona race winner Will Tally in the car to set a fast lap. Track conditions were mixed during the 15-minute qualifying session, with most teams, including our Audi, opting for rain tires on the damp track. Ultimately, those that gambled with slicks were rewarded as the track quickly dried, leaving Will and the team with a 13th-place starting position for Friday's race.
As race day arrived, so did dry track conditions (after a quick morning drizzle...we are talking about Florida, after all). Knowing that it would be a long race, our plan to start the race was to be consistent and conservative. Attrition is always a factor with the longer Michelin Pilot Challenge events, and if you can avoid mishaps, you are usually rewarded with a good result.
During Will's time in the car (a roughly two-and-a-half-hour stint to start the race), we were able to race to the lead with the right strategy during the pit cycle, leading a handful of laps while clocking lap times consistent with the TCR class leaders.
As Tristan jumped into the car with 90 minutes left in the race, the TCR class had thinned as several cars had retired or fallen out of contention. With fresh rubber and a full fuel load, Tristan got to climbing up the TCR leaderboard. He had settled into a position just outside the top 5 when a full-course caution paused the action as cleanup commenced. Team principal and strategist, John Martin, made the call for fuel only during what would be our final pit stop of the race. This ended up as the right strategy, as it gave Tristan the track position needed to fight for a podium position in the TCR class. A late-race pass moved Tristan out of a podium position, but he was able to cross the line in 4th position as the highest-finishing Audi in the class.
A 4th-place result in the most grueling race of our season is a massive confidence booster for our young team. We will take the lessons learned and experience gained from Daytona into our next event- the Alan Jay Automotive Network 120 at Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida.

Jay had an incredible first time on track with NASA Mid-Atlantic at the Fall Finale! β

He spent the weekend behind the wheel of a professionally track-prepped Miata courtesy of RP Performance, with OG Porsche expert Mark Francis instructing him from the passenger seat. While Jay has lots of Sim racing experience, he says it was a totally different experience driving on a real track! He had to hone in and focus on the feeling of driving a real car and being situationally aware of other cars. His practice on the Sim rig gave him a huge leg up in terms of already having a good understanding of the driving line. Nice work Jay! Thanks, NASA- MA for a great season finale!

Rookie racer Deacon Greenfield is wrapping up an impressive season of racing. After spending six years racing with his local RC car club, he moved on to indoor electric karting before attending SCCA competition school this spring. Deacon chose to run SSM, knowing that Miata's are an excellent and affordable entry into racing. "Miata racing has a scope of drivers with 10+ years of experience, from beginners, to everything in between! My rookie season is going great, and I'm leaning more every race and still running higher in the field than I ever thought possible."
Deacon raced strategically to a well deserved sixth place finish during his last race, battling it out with more experienced racers, including pro racers. Congratulations on a phenomenal race and setting a new personal best!
βI like to think that RC gave me the mechanical inner workings and tuning perspective on racing as I grow my newbie skills," says Deacon, as he wraps up his CRX build to race with STL in SCCA, and in Honda Challenge with NASA next season.
Good luck to all SSM racers at the last MARRS race of the year this weekend at NJMP! After this weekend's race, our local WDCR points winners will be official, and a handful of SSM racers will get their hands on fresh head-to-toe gear from OG!

You may recognize Rich Hromin as an accomplished racer known for winning multiple MARRS Points and SCCA championships and breaking numerous track records. We got the scoop on how his racing career began!
From a young age, Rich was always into cars. All it took was one family vacation to the Catskills, a local go-kart track down the street, and a willing uncle for him to catch the racing bug! Soon after, Rich attended a 3-day Skip Barber competition course followed promptly by SCCA comp school in a 2000 Dodge Viper GTS at Pocono raceway. (can you say dream car?!)
After racing with SCCA in ITE and ITS classes in Porsche 944s, Spec Miata began gaining popularity on a national level, and Rich made his Spec Miata debut. But as racing grew more expensive, the Showroom Spec Miata class boasted equal competition to Spec Miata while keeping racing costs relatively low.
When Rich switched to racing SSM, he had no idea how many opportunities would be around the corner. Working with RP Performance and BSR (now known as Summit Point Training Facility) jumpstarted Rich's driver coaching endeavors and provided numerous chances for seats in other race cars. Some of the things Rich learned from training drivers with BSR he has been able to apply to his racing today.
When asked the best part about racing SSM, Rich said, "from rookie to pro racer, there's always someone to race!" Having a large, competitive, and equal racing field makes things interesting, but Rich says it's the community of people that keeps him coming back for more.
