This week, our volleyball community lost one of its greatest visionaries. Dean Shumway, the founder of the Northern Virginia Volleyball Association passed away peacefully by his family. Among many other accomplishments for the volleyball community, Dean founded the Northern Virginia Volleyball Association (NVVA) in 1997, with the goal of growing volleyball in the area. Dean had the vision to help kids start loving volleyball at a young age, and that vision led him to create NVVA’s Loudoun Youth Volleyball, a fall league that today has more than 1400 participants. Through his vision, the Virginia Volleyball Center, our state-of-the-art volleyball facility was also created. Today, NVVA provides volleyball opportunities to more than 2500 families per year and is proudly continuing to accomplish Dean’s vision and dream.
“ Last time I had a chance to spend some time with Dean was on July 14th, 2017, almost exactly 3 years ago. His passion and knowledge not only of volleyball as a sport but of how it can influence kids and their growth was always fascinating to me. He always made it clear that his goal for NVVA was to be the place kids fall in love with volleyball. Dean shook my hand and said he was very pleased I was fulfilling his vision. This has been my proudest moment at NVVA.” says NVVA President/CEO, Rodrigo Gomes.
The Northern Virginia Volleyball Association sends the Shumway family its deepest condolences. We invite those of you who have had the pleasure to spend time with Dean, to share your stories in the comments below.
When coaching our athletes, one of the most important principles we like to teach is that simple movements are better than complex movements. We believe this principle in reality applies to any sport. When kicking a soccer ball, throwing a football or passing a volleyball, the simpler the movement, the easier it will be to repeat.
How do you train to keep your movements simple?
Congratulations coach Mari!!!
