Building the Unsexy Startup
Most startup advice is written for software founders. I build fiber pots.
When I started DocuPots, I quickly realized that building in materials and manufacturing is a different game. There are no overnight user spikes. No rapid feature releases. Progress happens in testing cycles, supplier negotiations, tooling adjustments, and long conversations with growers who have been doing things the same way for decades.
Plastic became the default in horticulture because it was cheap, durable, and convenient. Replacing it is not just about creating a better product. It is about rethinking a system that has optimized around plastic for years. That kind of change does not move at software speed.
I have learned that in physical product startups, patience is not optional. You measure momentum in pilot programs, in incremental performance improvements, in the first customer willing to try something new. It is slower, but it is tangible.
If you are building outside of SaaS, especially in climate or materials, you are probably familiar with this rhythm. It is less visible, less celebrated, and often more capital intensive. But it is also where some of the most meaningful change happens.
For founders building in so called unsexy industries, what has surprised you most about the journey?

Hi everyone, some of you here are also on my personal page, so sorry for the duplication of this message. I am working golf tees to augment my reach with pulped paper products. I am raising money to buy a mold for that through a platform called Kiva. I will include a link at the end of this. Kiva is a crowfunding loan with no interest and no fees (great for the one receiving the loan). Any money you put in will be returned as I pay off the loan. I am currently at around 40% of what I need and am asking for additional support. I appreciate your time and would like your support in this and purchase of DocuPots as that time of year approaches. Here is the link and thank you https://links.kiva.org/s/c/e4EHTCoSiH4xTBXoIJpMNun7xYdsbqMtTk4m44Dha3PgtG6tueM_tjH-lDrBWFYHRxxBpBStlwKWDw1XZLplvmvXxaFUe5tps4oOrkqg0wJbThYzUZOhGD-mJV4aAOxIM1AY56Qaysl4B9PDYUESKiklAB6RNeSh-8AL35URll5FjRVgTeX1mGC6MZRJE7qWQR2fqjGgWzSBOZIwBooVRGisFQRnHjsTjTM94YWUSTGrpr_-iDgPjU-jmNVLrZLCCnHIFo7LCimIKRuxBTJVRZXKkDiHgkVGGduEA4YpyXnQdNTyBU1wgB1fCvjoBvlQKStB5vE1Jg1ZQYs7mWuxONdAezabl6yhL_ufnSIwFYACukCY/VGCHflr0IWsuXzK4ZoWFM09YrC-vK-Dl/9
Happy first day of spring. Great time to get your DocuPots and start some plants. Www.docupots.com
Took the first sales trip of the year, not much of a trip about 8 hours. Two places agreed to use them in a trial production, one remembered me from last year (need to follow up) and the last one liked the pots but didn't sell any last year. I need to figure out how to connect to their customers.
I've seen so many posts so far this year saying for a business to do well we need to post more. So here goes. DocuPots actually help you know the condition of you plant soil. If the pot is dry, your soil is dry.
