Psst, did you hear something? These two prairie dogs were checking out the situation in super cute mode. They are obviously pals and were hanging out together while I took these photos from about 30 feet away. After about three minutes, they decided to not take any chances on the two legged creature nearby, and disappeared into their burrow.

This sweet mule deer was enjoying a meal of Rocky Mountain bee plant flowers when I spotted her. I watched as she moseyed across the meadow, munching as she went. She was aware of me but ignoring me at first, then after I did not go away, finally decided to fully check me out. Here is the resulting image of her looking at me as if she is saying “can I help you?” 😄

I’m not a big fan of winter photography when it involves snow and being cold, which is pretty much the whole winter 😄. But on the occasions when I do venture out to get some shots, I am always glad I braved the cold. This cute little amazingly found some green leaves in the snow and posed with his prize for a brief moment. I am always grateful when I get a shot of a bird before it flies away, so this was a small victory!

I just loved this little guy in the pond by the meadow, his head up to see if finally I had gone away 😄. No such luck! I’m not a turtle expert but he seems to be a northern but could also be a painted or something else altogether. It’s really difficult to tell without full body photos and he would not let me get close enough for those!

Parallel worlds exist right in front of us. Within them, lives are lived in the light and in the dark and places in between. Near my favorite meadow is a large pond and there I find many creatures to photograph. Later on, when revisiting that day’s captures I often find photos that appear . Or are they? These were just a stone’s throw from me, in the , but look closely. Is that the moon and is that a drop of precious amber dripping down, luring the second to his demise or perhaps to his delight? The murky water below reveals no secrets and summer is long gone. There are no answers, only imagination in the parallel world, and the story ends however you want it to.

days in the shine like jewels for me in the depths of winter. The long and lingering daylight, katydid choruses and buzzing bees all set the perfect stage for what I consider the royalty of the meadow. This lived up to that title, lit up by the afternoon sun like a painting on black velvet.

Especially when I am near water, it’s all about the light. On my last trip to the meadow, I was walking at the lake’s edge as the shadows grew long in the afternoon. This red-winged blackbird started squawking at me and was quite agitated by my presence. He was perched atop the cattails at the same moment the sun peeked out from behind a cloud. Sometimes being dive-bombed can be worth it!

It was a glorious day, and the butterflies were everywhere - well, except in this one spot. There was one tiny butterfly in a clump of bright yellow flowers, alone and apart from the rest of the crowd, just looking. What strikes me the most about this captured moment is the feeling of time. Time passing and time standing still, all at once. Not long ago a caterpillar, the butterfly is now in his full glory. He’s looking out at the flowers, some in full bloom and some faded. He’s perfectly still - but time keeps moving, and he is changing as well without even knowing it. He’s just like us. No matter how still we may try to be, everything is changing around us and within us all at once. Nothing is meant to stay the same.

I haven’t been posting as much lately, and thought I should say something for those of you who may have noticed. I’ve been coming to terms with the passing of a friend and colleague who recently lost his hard-fought battle with cancer. It’s a private type of thing but what I do want to share with you is quite a bit of my energy is largely funneled elsewhere as I work through my own emotions. I’ll be taking some time in the coming few weeks to rest and rejuvenate. I hope you will stick around in the meantime; I will continue to share thoughts in my stories and post when I can.
About the photo: This Onaqui wild mare looks like she may be thinking about something that makes her feel a bit sad and wistful. At the same time, she seems to be at peace. I love and admire the resilience and rich emotional lives of these wild horses who are such an inspiration to me.

I stayed a little later in the meadow than usual on this particular day, and as the shadows grew longer I found this monarch butterfly posing on a beautiful zinnia flower. The light was amazing and dramatic and lit him up like a neon light. The scene was a bit surreal so I was pleased to find a small spiderweb on the flower stalk and left it on the image as a stamp of reality.

In the forest, at any given moment you are being watched by at least one set of eyes. On this particular hike, something made me stop on the trail and I saw him, peering at me from inside his little house. I was only able to click off a couple of shots before other hikers approached and he flew away.

These two tiger swallowtail butterflies are flirting. They both landed on the same thistle flower at the same time and seemed surprised to see each other there. Instead of one of them flying off, they both stayed and proceeded to go around and around like a carousel, oblivious to my presence. I caught them here making eye contact as they played.

How many of us can see ourselves in this photo with respect to our Mom? She is there, in the background supporting and pushing us along to take that step to be the best we can be. With unwavering support and unconditional love, she nurtures, fusses over and is proud of us. And in my case, she is always by my side even though she is no longer physically here. I hope you are as blessed as I am to have had such an incredible Mom. And I wish all of you who are Moms yourselves a very Happy Mother’s Day.

What makes your heart pound, without your making a move? For me, it is being eye to eye with a wild, free animal. To have them look right at me, to acknowledge me, just does something I can’t fully explain. I can’t help but wonder, what are they thinking? What do they make of me? How I wish I could communicate with them to learn their stories, hear their thoughts, and to share mine.

I am a big fan of the tiny skipper butterflies who seem to get far less attention than their flashy swallowtail cousins. They have the most expressive faces, or at least I see them that way. Usually I see the skippers as being deep in thought, making a philosophical assessment of the flower they are on, or of the world at large - or both. This little guy was perched on top of his world, surveying the riot of color around him. I have not yet done a butterfly in black & white so figured it was time - and found in doing this a most butterfly. Which one do you prefer?

My photography has been a passport to experiences I’d likely not otherwise have. One of these experiences was a photoshoot with a mountain lion and her cub. I don’t want to mislead anyone that this was photographed in the wild, however I can tell you that this darling cub was not a house cat. His mother was extremely protective and there was no barrier between us. I pretty much held my breath the entire time. I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Before enjoying a good book or a nap in your backyard, you best be certain you have filled up the feeder or you will get this insistent hello to remind you! I love the ruby throated hummingbirds and am looking forward to their return to my garden. Photographing them is a challenge, but every now and then I’m rewarded with a shot like this one.

Dragonflies are notorious hunters and this one was no exception. I caught him in a rare moment being still for several seconds as he observed his domain. The sun was low in the sky bringing out the vibrant jewel tones of the late summer meadow. I noticed as I was editing this image that his wings match the flowers where he is perched, a good disguise for his hunting success.

I am a butterfly stalker .. this one doesn’t realize it, but he is being watched. I literally hold my breath so they don’t know I am there and then sneak up on them to get shots like this one. It’s a sickness, I know, but one I hope to never recover from! A day in the meadow can do so much to rejuvenate a soul.

Some of the tiniest things I come across on my are the most beautiful and intricate. Like this precisely painted hoverfly that I caught pollinating a sky-blue chicory flower. Stopping to look closely at the ordinary while out in nature can be so rewarding! What’s the tiniest beautiful thing you have ever seen on your nature walks?

We’re still a few months away what I consider the best days in the meadow. The summer flowers in crazy full bloom and these tiny little butterflies gorging themselves on the nectars. Some of my favorite days are spent in the meadow surrounded by buzzing life. Where do you like to go for a favorite day?
