After competing at the APHA World Show later this month, Graham will head to Tulsa for the NRCHA Hackamore Classic, where he’ll step into the cow horse pen in the Level 1 Open Derby.

It’s not often a horse spends one week showing the NRHA reining, ranch trail, rail, and ranch riding at a World Show, then turns around and competes at one of the premier cow horse events in the country the next week. 😎

Do you know how cream color genetics work?

We’ll look at the 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙚𝙚 𝙗𝙖𝙨𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙖𝙩𝙨 that every horse starts out with.

🔴𝐑𝐞𝐝 (ee)
Red + cream = palomino
Red + two creams = cremello

🟤 𝐁𝐚𝐲 (Aa)
Bay + cream = buckskin
Bay + two creams = perlino

⚫️ 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 (aa)
Black + cream = smoky black
Black + two creams = smoky cream

✨ Important to note:
Cream does not affect black pigment, so a smoky black will appear just as black, and testing is needed to confirm cream unless one parent is a double dilute. This is also why buckskin horses still have black legs & a black mane & tail!

✨ Heritability of genes depends on homozygosity of parents. If the dam is red based, we know she is [ee] at extension, and therefore will pass one [e] 100% of the time. If sire is bay, or black based and is tested [EE], meaning homozygous dominant extension, we know he will pass one [E] 100% of the time. So the resulting foal will be [Ee]. Whether that foal is bay or black depends also on the parent’s agouti status. If sire IS black [aa], and dam is [Aa], we know our only options are bay or black for the foal. Sire MUST pass one [a] and dam will have a 50% chance of passing either [A] or [a].
📍 The resulting foal from this cross would be either bay based [EeAa] or black based [Eeaa]. Add in the respective cream genes and you have a buckskin, perlino, smoky black or smoky cream!
📍 If one parent is homozygous cream, and one parent has zero cream, foal will ALWAYS have one cream.
📍 Cream mimics: Champagne, pearl, and max white are sometimes mistaken for one or double cream coats. If you’re unsure of a horse’s color, do a deep pedigree dive to sleuth color genetics, OR simply pull hair and send to UCDavis for accurate answers.

I don’t think these photos are a very common sight in the cowhorse world. I’ve seen one or two double dilutes in the cowhorse, but not very many!

𝙍𝙪𝙜𝙜𝙚𝙙 𝙄𝙣 𝙒𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙚𝙧𝙨 won the Jr. Working Cow Horse last weekend at Romals & Rowels, earning points towards his AQHA World Show qualification & show record 🎉 (Now if his rider can get it together, we’ll be good to go 🤣)

Coming April 2027 ✨ Rugged In Wranglers x Fancysteppinplaygirl. “Fancy” is not only an accomplished reiner by a son of Wimpys Little Step, but she has also been shown with the CSU Stock Horse team during the 2025-26 season, and was high score in the 2nd go round at NIRSHA last month, marking an 80 in the ranch riding. We’re looking forward to a super versatile, big trotting, dragging tail foal in 2027!

Breeding season is in full swing and we sent semen to three lucky mares this morning! 🎉🤩
