Genetics firm 23andMe says user data stolen in credential stuffing attack 10/08/2023

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/genetics-firm-23andme-says-user-data-stolen-in-credential-stuffing-attack/

Recently I was talking to a physician who suggested I get my genetic profile taken.

I’ve always had data security concerns about the idea. The below article is just one of the reasons

The doctor told me that while I did have the right to have my organic sample destroyed; I did not have the right to have my data completely wiped.

Be aware that if you get your genetic profile taken it may be used, in certain circumstances, by governmental agencies as part of criminal investigations, it may be exposed to hackers, and as the laws change and evolve it may even be subject to more uses, which you’d have no real control over.

Whenever someone assures you that data-security isn’t an issue, and that they’ve taken the very best precautions, that’s your cue to walk away. The best data security involves limiting access, both in terms of length of time its in another’s possession, as well as which parties have contractual access to it.

Genetics firm 23andMe says user data stolen in credential stuffing attack 23andMe has confirmed to BleepingComputer that it is aware of user data from its platform circulating on hacker forums and attributes the leak to a credential-stuffing attack.
