Whether it’s a tiny frog, a curious lemur, a watchful raptor, a fluffy sheep, or a majestic Amur leopard, veterinary care touches every animal at our Zoo. Through routine exams, diagnostics, surgeries, and lifesaving moments, Dr. Rivera, veterinary technician Julia, our vet med interns, and the many doctors and specialists who have supported us all help make that care possible behind the scenes. We’re grateful for the dedication and compassion you bring to our Zoo every day. Happy Veterinary Appreciation Day! 🩺🐾

90 years 🎉
Today, we celebrate 90 extraordinary years of connecting people with wildlife, inspiring curiosity and learning, and creating memories that last a lifetime.
Since opening our gates in 1936, we’ve welcomed generations of visitors, cared for countless animals, and become part of the fabric of our community. From Groundhog Day predictions and Spooktacular traditions to the legacy of Dr. Patricia O’Connor, the beloved Jalopy, exciting renovations and new exhibits, and even a few moments in the spotlight, the zoo has continued to grow while remaining a place where families can make memories together.
While a lot has changed over nine decades, our mission remains the same: to inspire a love of animals and the natural world in everyone who visits.
Thank you to our guests, members, staff, volunteers, donors, and community for being part of our story. Here’s to 90 years of memories—and the moments still waiting to be made for generations to come 💚

Tomorrow marks the Staten Island Zoo’s 90th Anniversary! Over the last 90 years, the zoo has found itself in some pretty memorable moments.
Did you know an episode of Sesame Street was filmed right here at the Staten Island Zoo? The visit introduced young viewers to animals and conservation while putting a little piece of Staten Island on television screens across the country.
The zoo also welcomed a Hollywood production when scenes for Mr. Popper’s Penguins, starring Jim Carrey, were filmed on zoo grounds. For a few days, the zoo traded its usual routine for cameras, crews, and movie magic.
These are just two of the many stories that have helped shape our history over the past 90 years. How many of these Staten Island Zoo fun facts did you know?
🐾 90 years. Countless memories. One wild history. 🐾
Harriet with the shot! 🏀🐦⬛
