Diet has a direct impact on both hormone production and their signaling pathways. Thus, it’s important not to miss key nutrients that support hormone balance!

Let’s review 3 vitamins & minerals that play a critical role in male hormone balance

1️⃣ ZINC
This mineral plays an essential role in hormone function, from male fertility [1] to maintaining the lining of reproductive organs.

Deficient levels of zinc can cause s***m abnormalities and lower testosterone concentration, growth impairment, hypogonadism [2], and some endocrine diseases.
Good sources of zinc include:
🦐 Seafood
🥩 Beef
🐖 Pork
🫘 Legumes
🥛 Dairy
🥣 Oatmeal

2️⃣ MAGNESIUM
Research suggests it's not only crucial for managing testosterone levels [3] but also for keeping anxiety and depression at bay [4]. It is one of the most common nutrient needs on planet earth!
⠀Magnesium is found in:
🥜 Seeds & nuts
🥗 Spinach
🫘 Beans

3️⃣ VITAMIN B6
This B vitamin is effective when combined with magnesium in adults with severe stress [5]. Thus, during stressful periods (which is most days of the week for modern Americans!), focus on including ingredients that provide adequate magnesium AND vitamin B6..
Good sources of vitamin B6 are:
🐟 Tuna
🍣 Salmon
🐓 Chicken
🥔 Potatoes
🍌 Bananas

One of the most powerful tools at our disposal for maintaining optimal male hormone balance and health: nutrition!

What you eat impacts hormone production and their pathways of communication. A balanced diet can work wonders in keeping these hormones in sync.

Remember those hunger-regulating hormones, leptin and ghrelin? Well, they, along with testosterone, are influenced by the fat content in the diet.

Heart-healthy omega-3 and omega-6 f fats are found in foods like olive oil, avocados, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel. These fats aren't just good for your heart; they also influence s***m quality, motility, and acrosome reaction.

Research even shows that the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in these heart-healthy fats, can improve erectile dysfunction!

Omega-3 fats can also assist with stress reduction by lowering cortisol levels.

Unfortunately, The Standard American Diet (aptly abbreviated as SAD), is loaded with saturated fats from sources like beef, pork, cheese, butter, and dairy desserts like ice cream. This imbalance undermines hormone harmony, and it's linked to issues like erectile dysfunction, infertility, insulin resistance, and heart disease.

When looking to optimize male hormone health, it’s important to get individualized guidance. Consider booking a Health Screening with one of our Clinical Nutritionists to kickstart your journey to better health!

✨ Surgery recovery isn't just about getting through the procedure. It’s about giving your body what it needs to rebuild.
In Part 2 of this series, BeWell clinician Rachel Long, MS, CNS shares the nutrients she prioritized after surgery:
✔️ Zinc for wound healing and tissue repair
✔️ Vitamin C to support collagen production
✔️ Extra protein to help rebuild and recover

One thing Rachel noticed? Having protein-rich foods prepared ahead of time made recovery much easier when energy and appetite were low.
🥚 Eggs
🐟 Salmon
🍗 Chicken
🥤 Protein and collagen powders

These simple tools helped support healing and made recovery feel dramatically different compared to the same surgery she had years earlier.

Whether you're preparing for surgery, recovering from an injury, or simply supporting healthy aging, nutrition plays a powerful role in how the body repairs itself.

At BeWell, we help clients build personalized nutrition and supplement plans for every stage of healing.

💙 Sometimes the best recovery strategy starts in the kitchen.

💪 Men’s health is about WAY more than testosterone. Hormones like insulin, cortisol, thyroid hormones, leptin, and ghrelin all work together to impact:
⚡ energy
🏋️ muscle mass
🧠 mood + focus
🔥 metabolism
❤️ cardiovascular health
😴 sleep + stress resilience

Low testosterone can increase risk for insulin resistance and heart issues — but chronic stress, blood sugar imbalance, and poor thyroid function can also LOWER testosterone in the first place.

Everything is connected.

That’s why at BeWell, we take a functional nutrition approach to men’s hormone health — looking at the whole system, not just one lab value.

🧪Ask your BeWell clinician about functional hormone testing this Men’s Health Month.

In a 2014 study by Bala et al., researchers gave healthy adults enough alcohol to reach a blood alcohol level of 0.08%, the legal driving limit in most states.

Then they tracked levels of bacterial toxins (LPS) in the bloodstream.

What they found was striking 👇
After just ONE episode of heavy drinking, endotoxin levels in the blood increased significantly.

Why?
Because alcohol disrupted the gut barrier, allowing bacterial toxins to pass into circulation - what many people call “leaky gut.”

Even more interesting:
Researchers found the endotoxin levels stayed elevated until alcohol was FULLY cleared from the body.

Meaning - As long as alcohol was present, the gut barrier remained impaired.

Over time, chronic alcohol intake may contribute to:
🚨microbiome disruption
🚨 increased inflammation
🚨reduced beneficial short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)
🚨mood and anxiety changes
🚨progression toward liver disease

This isn’t about fear or perfection. It’s about understanding how everyday choices impact inflammation, gut health, and long-term wellness.

At BeWell, we believe education is empowering 💙
