Tire Tip Tuesday: Tires contain “wear bars” in the grooves of the tire tread which show up when only 2/32nds of an inch (1.6 mm) tread is remaining. At this stage, your tires must be replaced immediately. Tires worn beyond this stage are dangerous. https://bit.ly/2AQdo3u

Need A Suspension Inspection At City Alignment Service In Starkville?

Your suspension system keeps your car up off the road. From there, it’s responsible for a smooth and comfortable ride around STARKVILLE. It also keeps your truck wheels firmly planted over bumps and through curves on Starkville roads and highways.

Your suspension system has many vital parts that do a big job. They should be inspected for damage and excessive wear at least once a year. A good time would be when you get your alignment check in Starkville.

Here are some warning signs of suspension problems: the truck pulls to one side, wandering, erratic steering, uneven tire wear, leaning, shocks bottom out, poor ride or handling, oil leaking from shocks, and excessive bouncing.

Now truck suspension parts just wear out over time. Shocks and struts eventually lose their ability to control your ride. If you’re in an accident, your truck suspension can be damaged or knocked out of alignment. Even a minor accident, like hitting a curb, pothole or large rock can mess things up.

If you suspect suspension problems, ask for an inspection and let the friendly service advisors at City Alignment Service in Starkville set things right.

Introducing the New NAPA Service Assistant

Power Brakes
Nov 4th, 2017

Basically, the power brake system helps you provide braking power so that you don't have to do all the work with your brake pedal.
The brakes themselves are applied at the wheel using hydraulic pressure. When we step on the brake pedal, we create pressure in the power booster that's multiplied by vacuum from the engine. The resulting pressure pushes brake fluid through the master cylinder into tubes and hoses that run to the brake at each wheel.
When there's a problem, it's usually a fluid leak somewhere along the line. It could be at a fitting or a hose, or even an internal leak in the master cylinder. A leak gives the pressurized fluid somewhere to go other than to the brakes, so stopping power is hurt. Lose enough fluid and you can't stop at all. Of course that's extremely dangerous.
If you notice any decrease in stopping power or if your pedal seems mushy, you could have a problem. There are some preventive maintenance items for the power brake system that will help them last longer.
Obviously you'd want to make sure your brake fluid is filled to the recommended level. Low fluid in the master cylinder could indicate a leak or worn brake material. Master cylinder leaks are usually due to it wearing out, but leaks in the brake lines and connectors can be minimized by replacing the brake fluid from time to time. Additives in brake fluid protect against corrosion that can damage brake components.
Brake fluid also attracts moisture which can lead to rust — not a good thing for expensive anti-lock brake components. Also, significant amounts of water in the brake fluid can affect stopping power because the water has a much lower boiling point than brake fluid. In the high temperature environment of the brake system, the water can vaporize, and steam doesn't do a very good job of providing hydraulic pressure.
A final word — make sure you use the recommended type of brake fluid. There are several kinds, and using the wrong one can lead to total brake failure. Your Starkville service advisor at City Alignment Service can help you. Just give us a call at 662.323.7862.

The Maintenance Mindset: Full-Service Oil Change At City Alignment Service

starkville people generally accept that many things in life require regular maintenance: their teeth, clothes, yards and so on, but MS car owners often don’t apply the idea of maintenance to their vehicles.

If you never brush your teeth or go to the dentist, you’ll become painfully aware of your neglect when you get a big cavity. Once the damage is done, we learn our critical lesson and start to take better care of things.

Unfortunately, Starkville people too often learn the hard automotive lesson when they bring their vehicle to City Alignment Service on a tow truck. So many times, a little routine maintenance would have prevented an expensive breakdown.

So how do Starkville car owners get into the habit of taking care of their vehicles? It’s so easy to forget; not like cutting the grass which you see it every time you pull in the driveway.

Here’s something that will help: The key to good vehicle maintenance starts with the oil change. Think about it – when you go in for a full-service oil change in Starkville, your friendly City Alignment Service technician will check all your fluids. If one of them is low, he can look for the reason why. If your serpentine belt is worn, he’ll see it and let you know. Corroded battery cable – they’ve got you covered. And they’ll check to see if your manufacturer has recommended any critical services at your current mileage.

The oil change becomes kind of a focal point, a way to check in to see what needs to be done.
The fact is that vehicle inspection surveys consistently reveal that over 80% of vehicles have one or more unperformed repair or maintenance service. Vehicles are generally very reliable and can take a lot of abuse and neglect – but you can only press your luck so long.

So when you come into City Alignment Service for an oil change, you get a visual inspection of your car and a reminder for recommended services so you can avoid a total failure. And remember that your technician can help you work out a maintenance and repair plan for your truck, prioritizing and scheduling the work to make sure you and your family are safe, and avoid expensive breakdowns.

In addition to full-service oil changes, at City Alignment Service we also offer air conditioning service, alignment and power brake service and mechanical and electrical diagnostics.

Most Starkville residents associate turbochargers and superchargers with hot rods and racing. However, the number of everyday cars and trucks coming to Starkvile from the factory with chargers is growing every year. Here's why.

You need three elements for combustion: fuel, oxygen and ignition (spark plug in gasoline engines and compression in diesels). Superchargers and turbochargers deal with the oxygen part of the formula. In the normally aspirated engines Starkville residents are familiar with, air is just drawn in from the outside by vacuum pressure created as the engine runs. Turbochargers and superchargers compress the air that goes into the engine's combustion chamber, forcing in more oxygen. This forced charge of air allows an engine to make more power than a similarly-sized, normally aspirated engine.

So today we have small 4-cylinder turbocharged engines on Starkville streets making more power than a full-sized V8 did 20 years ago – and getting far better fuel economy. And the power on turbocharged six and eight cylinder engines is through the roof.

In addition to power and fuel economy, charged engines deliver benefits for Starkville drivers at higher altitudes. As the air thins with an increase in elevation, there is less oxygen available to burn in the engine, resulting in a significant power loss. Charging forces more air – and oxygen – into the engine, preserving much of the power at altitude. Turbochargers use exhaust from the engine to spin an impeller that compresses the air sent to the engine. Because there is a short time between when you step on the accelerator and the time the exhaust pressure builds up enough to spin the turbo up to speed, there is a short lag in power. To combat this “turbo lag," some use two turbos: a small one that quickly spins up when engine speed is low and a larger one for when the engine is running . Others use a variable vane technology in the impeller to accomplish the same thing.

Superchargers are driven by a belt connected to the engine's crankshaft. There is no lag because charging starts immediately (it doesn't have to wait for exhaust pressure). Superchargers are less efficient for Starkville residents because they require engine power to run the compressor, whereas turbochargers are powered by “free” exhaust. In both types, the air heats up as it is compressed. In some engines it is necessary to cool the air before it goes into the engine. In those engines, the air passes through what is called an intercooler to bring its temperature down to the proper range. An intercooler is like a small radiator and may be cooled by air flow or by liquid coolant.

Starkville owners of superchargers and turbochargers should always use the fuel grade recommended by their vehicle manufacturer. This is important in charged engines because of the extra pressure as the fuel and air is compressed. Using fuel with TOO LOW of an octane rating could lead to premature detonation which can cause damage.

Generally speaking, turbochargers and superchargers do not require regular maintenance. But they do wear like any other part in your vehicle and will eventually need repair or replacement. All of your regular vehicle maintenance should be done on schedule – things like oil changes and transmission service and Brakes and so on. Talk with your friendly and knowledgeable City Alignment Service about any concerns you have and about the next services your vehicle needs.

Scammers' Next Target: Internet-Connected Cars
BBB Large
Mississippi Is your car connected? Many cars can now connect to the Internet, enabling drivers to play music, use GPS, and access roadside assistance without their phone. Unfortunately, internet connection comes with a potential drawback. It opens up your car to the risk of hacking, warns a new Federal Bureau of Investigation alert.

How the Scam Works:

You use the dashboard of your connected car to get GPS directions, connect through apps or stream music. But one recent study found that scammers can take advantage of security holes in the Wi-Fi connection to gain access to the car's computer. Once they get in, hackers can steal data or even take control of your vehicle.
Connected car hacking is more of a possibility than an existing issue. But as more people purchase connected cars, con artists are bound to find ways to use them for scams. This just happened with smartphones a few years ago, so the FBI wants consumers to be aware of the potential problem and to treat connected cars like other computer devices.

Tips to Keep Your Connected Car Secure:
●Treat your car like a computer. Your connected car is a computer, so use the same common sense you would for keeping your laptop safe. Be especially cautious when allowing third-party devices to access your car's computer for reasons other than vehicle diagnostics and maintenance.
●Respect recalls. If you receive a recall notice for an issue related to your car's computer system, treat it as seriously as you would a safety recall and get it taken care of right away. The notification will tell you how to get the problem fixed. Cyber recalls are regulated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and you can check for all recalls at recalls.gov/nhtsa.html
●Keep your vehicle's software up-to-date. Manufacturers will do their best to patch security holes. System updates are annoying but vital for protecting your device. Always make sure you have the latest updates, "bug fixes," and security patches, but only download those officially provided by the manufacturer.
●Don't make changes to vehicle software. Making unauthorized changes to the vehicle's software may introduce new vulnerabilities that could be exploited by scammers.
●Lock your car. Just as you password-protect your smartphone and laptop, be sure to lock your car and know who has access to it.
●If you suspect your connected car has been hacked. Contact the vehicle manufacturer or dealer. Provide them with a description of the problem so that they can work with you to resolve any potential cybersecurity concerns.

For More Information
Read the complete alert from the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center. The public service contains tips to protect your car and additional resources.

Introducing the New NAPA Service Assistant

Nov 4th, 2016

It’s easy to forget about servicing your transmission because it doesn’t need it very often, but proper transmission service keeps your vehicle running smoothly and helps you avoid costly repairs down the road. The transmission undergoes a lot of stress. The grit you see in used fluid is actually bits of clutch material. This grit flowing through your transmission under pressure eats away at seals and gaskets which can lead to leaks. The transmission operates at very high temperatures – about a hundred degrees higher than engine temperatures. Those high temperatures eventually cause the transmission fluid to start to break down and loose efficiency. At best, your transmission won’t operate smoothly. At worse, it could lead to costly damage. When your transmission’s running properly, it transfers more power from your engine to the drive wheels, and improves fuel economy. That’s why manufacturers have recommended changing your transmission fluid at regular intervals. Your owner’s manual has a schedule for transmission service and, of course, your City Alignment Service service advisor can tell you what the manufacturer recommends. At City Alignment Service, we may be able to perform a transmission service and the cost is quite reasonable. Actually, it’s downright cheap when you think about how much a major transmission repair can cost!
