1. Do your weights before doing cardio
Anaerobic exercises such as weights are preferably done BEFORE cardio. This is to maximize the metabolic and hormonal response to this form of exercise. You also don't feel as "stuffed" after weights meaning, you can perform your best during both stages of your workout.
2. Pair carbohydrates with fats and/or protein
This is to balance the blood sugar response to your food. More balanced blood sugar = more balanced insulin levels throughout the day.
3.Focus on compound exercises
multi-muscle exercises (squats, lunges, push-ups etc) have a great metabolic and hormonal response compared to isolation exercises like bicep curls or tricep pushdowns.
4. Take 1.5g of L-carnitine
L-carnitine is an amino acid derivative that studies have found to improve insulin sensitivity, and hirsutism, regulate the menstrual cycle AND reduce BMI! (PMID: 31294953). Ideally, take it in the morning or 30 minutes before exercise.
5. Try not to drink your calories
So easy to forget the calories we consume via our drinks (coffee, soft drinks etc). Try to avoid these often 'forgotten' calories, which are nearly always sugar too!
6. Start meals with 2 vegetables & a proteins
This is for your main meals just to help try and find the optimal macronutrient ratio of your main meals throughout the day. Ideas for protein sources; (chicken, eggs, turkey, fish etc.)
7. Have a drink of green tea
Green tea has been found to lead to weight loss and reduce fasting insulin in women with PCOS. (PMID: 28584836).
8. Have a protein-based breakfast
Instead of a carb/sugar-loaded breakfast popularized via western society. Eggs on multigrain toast anybody? yum
9. Don't forget vitamin D, zinc & magnesium
This is for overall mood, energy levels, sleep quality, metabolic health etc. These nutrients are often depleted in PCOS which can create a number of issues. Getting optimal levels of all 3 will help you feel energized, positive, and rested on a daily basis.
