Deep in Kentucky’s Daniel Boone National Forest, the Devil’s Market House arch makes for one of the strangest and most beautiful natural sights you can find in the state. Unlike many Kentucky arches that are tucked into a cliffline, this one rises by itself in the woods, giving it a wild, almost unreal look the moment it comes into view. Its shape feels like a stone shelter, with openings, curves, and small window-like gaps worked into the rock from different sides. The arch is listed as an irregular sandstone arch, and its rock layers are part of the Corbin Sandstone Member of the Grundy Formation, the same kind of rugged geology that helps make this part of eastern Kentucky so full of cliffs, rockhouses, and hidden arches. Getting there is not a hard hike, but it is not a simple marked trail either. The route follows an old forest road, then a rough jeep path, before a short walk through the trees leads to the arch. A map or downloaded trail app is smart to have, since the path is unmarked and easy to miss in spots. Once you reach it, the setting feels still, remote, and surprisingly grand, like finding a small stone cathedral sitting alone in the forest.
