Our 2026 summer camp season is off to a great start! ☀️

In just the first week, we’ve spotted swimmers, scientists, athletes, chefs, gardeners, chess players, woodworkers, and more.

We can’t wait to keep playing, learning, and creating together all summer long! 🎉

This spring, first graders explored the meaning of “neighborhood,” learning about the homes, businesses, landmarks, and physical features that make every community unique. Students described and mapped their own neighborhoods before visiting two iconic St. Louis neighborhoods: The Delmar Loop and The Hill.

From visiting City Hall, the fire station, library, and post office in the Loop to exploring St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Milo’s Bocce Garden, local shops, and a chocolate factory on The Hill, students learned firsthand about the people and places that shape a community. Along the way, they ate great food and reflected on their experiences through discussions and hands-on activities back in the classroom.

First Grade’s study of St. Louis neighborhoods is a wonderful example of how hands-on experiences help students connect classroom learning to the real world while growing as curious and thoughtful citizens. 💫

Here’s a look back at Wednesday’s car parade celebrating the Class of 2026! Families decorated their cars for this special tradition, and the whole school gathered to cheer them on before summer break.

We’re excited to stay connected with our graduates and watch them shine in secondary school and beyond! 🎓

Earlier this month, we gathered in the Broughton STEAM Center to celebrate the retirements of Dana Scott Saulsberry, Director of Admission, and Marieann Barratt, Upper Division Science Teacher. Generations of colleagues and families came together to honor their careers and the many contributions they’ve made to our school community. Stay tuned for more about their impact in an upcoming publication. 🎉

Later that evening, we recognized Community employees celebrating milestone years of service during our Annual Meeting. Congratulations to Ingrid Bonds, Rebecka Briney, Jessica Farris, Amy Breier, Anna Lemen-June, Danny Rodgers, Donna Scott, and Trisha Stanley (5 years); Therese Futhey and Kara Smith (10 years); Wayne Scott (15 years); and Martha Overcash (40 years)!

We also recognized Veronique Gardet as the 2026 Lowenhaupt Award recipient. As Head of School Laurie Smilack shared, “Over her 16 years at Community, she has been described as tireless, creative, and deeply committed to her students. She is someone who sets clear expectations, meets children with patience and care, and approaches her work with both professionalism and heart.” Congratulations, Vero! 💫

Building on their third grade study, our fourth graders continued exploring the macroinvertebrates in our campus pond. Students collected, analyzed, and recorded organisms living in the water, and examined chemical properties to help assess the pond’s overall health.

Their findings showed that the pond is healthy and supports a diverse range of organisms, making it a thriving ecosystem.

Great work, scientists! 💧🔬

It’s time for an alumni spotlight! 🎉

We recently hosted a reunion luncheon for Community School’s Class of 2020. It was wonderful to catch up with alumni, learn about their college plans, and reminisce about their time at Community while watching their class video. We also enjoyed chatting with parents while alums visited some of their favorite spots on campus.

Best wishes to all of our graduates on their next adventures! 🎓🎉

Meet Daniel, a fifth grader who recently stepped into the role of Community’s Head of School for the day!

Daniel’s agenda was packed. He greeted students, met with administrators, assisted teachers, and helped with recess supervision. He also enjoyed a tour of Community’s buildings and grounds with Mr. Young, plus some special time outside with his younger sisters.

When asked about the highlights of his day, he shared, “I enjoyed being out front to shake hands in the morning and making lunch announcements. I was very excited to grant a wish to students.” His announcement brought smiles across all three lunch periods: a Comfy Cozy Movie Day!

Way to go, Daniel! 🎉

Hear ye, hear ye! 🎭

Our 5th graders recently took the stage in “Shakespeare Smorgasbord,” a lively mashup of “Romeo and Juliet,” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” and “Hamlet.” Adapted by drama teacher Alissa Rowan, the performance blended Shakespeare’s classic stories with creativity, modern humor, and plenty of dramatic flair.

Our students brought their characters to life with confidence and enthusiasm, showcasing strong ensemble work, excellent comic timing, and seamless transitions. Bravo to our young thespians!

Special thanks to Jen Gosnell for altering the professional costumes.

To begin their study of Japan, third graders recently rotated through a series of centers exploring the country’s language and culture. Highlights included making origami, creating calligraphy, learning how to use chopsticks (with marshmallows!), and discussing customs, arts, and traditions. 🇯🇵

Nursery just wrapped up their annual farm and chick unit! Students explored early math and science concepts through hands-on “eggsperiments” and practiced communication, creativity, and cooperation through engaging motor activities. 🐣

After patiently watching eggs incubate for 21 days, our Nursery friends were eggstatic to meet their fluffy new classmates! They loved holding and gently caring for the chicks before they head to a nearby farm. Even our school dog, Skipper, joined in the fun. 🐶
