❗️PUPPY WALKING TIPS❗️

1. Practice WITHOUT the leash. It’s just a distracting tug toy at this age.

2. Feed in the position you want them to walk in. Not across your body from the other hand. Not too high so they have to jump up to get it. Not when they’ve spun around to face you. Feed (or mark) in the position you want or you’re not reinforcing the position.

3. Practice is easy environments with minimal distractions first, to set them up to succeed. It shouldn’t be a battle for their attention. Once they’ve learnt the game of sticking to your side, THEN start to take it to harder environments.

4. Don’t be stingy. The world is an exciting place and walking along at human pace next to you is pretty darn lame in comparison. Make it worth their time or be ready for it to take a long longer to train.

5. Don’t put the onus on them. They’re dogs, baby dogs. They have NO IDEA what you want. Even if you feel like you’ve practiced it a bunch, chances are they still probably have very little clue. The onus is on US to help them understand and learn, not on them to figure it out.

6. Short and sweet. Quick sessions often will get you much further than long sessions infrequently. Spend 2-3minutes tops then have a play and do something else. That way you quit before they lose interest and before your reps start to deteriorate.

7. Have fun! You should both be enjoying the process! It’s a game, it shouldn’t be stressful. If it is you’re probably asking too much of your pup and need to make it easier somehow ❤️

I don't know about you, but I don't like every person I meet and dogs don't like every dog they meet. Let's not set up dogs to fail by expecting more from them than we expect of ourselves. - Lori
